Because he knows he's been exposed and it doesn't look good for him now. He might not get to be on the SCOTUS and he's scared of what comes after he's not confirmed.

This man is an asshole of the highest (of the low) caliber, that became very clear when he used his daughters and their teammates as props during part of the hearing!
