He absolutely spent almost 2 years smacking the crap out of the F.B.I.
Why in hell would he want the F.B.I. to discover new evidence against Kavenaugh.
Unless he's got a bigger asshole waiting to be nominated down the line!
I just don't get it!

(49,001 posts)Better than having his nominee defeated on a close vote, just before the elections.
He'll say: "Who knew?" and pretend to be supportive of women. He may hope it defuses a big issue motivating Democrats and at the same time he would hope it would motivate R voters in readiness for the next nominee.
And if it is a tightly limited investigation and say "we haven't found anything as of this time", McCONnell-Grassley will say "Time's Up", "Got to vote now", "We gave him a fair hearing". tRump-Republicons are hoping that they can squeak this through and then if more dirt piles up, they'll say "Too late", and it will be extremely difficult to impeach Kavanaugh. Would essentially have to be able to prove he perjured himself, prove to the same standard as a court of law: beyond a reasonable doubt.

If the FBI comes back with evidence that's detrimental enough to Kavanaugh that he might lose the confirmation vote he'll act like he never really wanted Kavanaugh and he'll blame the disaster on the Senate. He could claim the FBI did a bogus, unfair and fake investigation but that's unlikely because it would be easier for him to throw Kavanaugh under the bus and go to the next person on the Federalist Society's list.

(8,922 posts)He doesn't have a choice if he wants Kavenaugh confirmed by the Senate. Without the investigation McConnell doesn't have the votes to confirm Kavenaugh.

(13,869 posts)Pretty simple and obvious answer.
Trump had two choices: call for the FBI investigation, or withdraw the nomination.

(2,149 posts)Is it just the pretext for a climax to all the paranoid deep state nut job rhetorical posturing where the conclusion is, Two Scoops announces the entire FBI is irredeemably corrupt and he starts gleefully firing people? Because they find that: the victim's story lines up with reality, Kavvo lies about everything, and his calendar is authentic vintage but the ink was still wet from his hasty scribbling with a pen from his office desk this week?

(10,123 posts)He did not want the FBI to investigate this but couldn't get the votes without it.
So now, they're going to try to let the FBI have a brief, inconclusive peak and then vote for Kavanaugh anyway.
Dems are going to have to present as much in affidavits and media to the media & FBI as they can in the next week.
They need to demonstrate to Flake's 2020 aspirations and other GOP politicians that they will take a big hit if they vote for the serial rapist.
I think that is the only chance to stop Kavanaugh
The GOP would be freaking out that they're running out of time to stack the Supreme Court.
