By Alexandra Hutzler On 9/29/18 at 9:43 AM
Former Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy warned high schoolers, as the toxic fight over confirming Brett Kavanaugh to replace him on the court continues, that the country is seeing the "death and decline of democracy."
Kennedy's appearance were a part of a Constitution Day celebration, as Kennedy went to teach students about the document, according to a report by the Associated Press.
The remarks came just after a whirlwind week surrounding Kavanaugh. The president was tasked with nominating a judge after Kennedy announced his retirement from the high court this past June. Kavanaugh was also once of Kennedy's law clerks.

Kennedy did not directly comment on Kavanaugh or the confirmation hearing by the Senate Judiciary Committee. He also declined to take questions from the audience. He urged the students to follow the Constitution and participate in civil discourse.
"You have to transmit it to the next generation," he said.

(58,785 posts)Hypocrite. He knows another form of government, which his own decisions helped turn us on the path to, would replace it and is accepting but fearful because he doesn't know yet what this destabilization would end in.
Words to manipulate and polish views of what he hopes will be his post-democracy legacy.
Not going to happen. He's going to be known for helping institutionalize corruption of our democracy through decisions like Citizens United, which came close to destroying our democracy before being overturned.

(518 posts)Kennedy is just another Republican who won't look in the mirror.
Although he has done some good with respect to gay rights. Pity Kavanaugh would overturn those rulings in a hot minute if he had the opportunity.

I suppose he thinks he holds no responsibility in that. He could have resisted the strong arming to retire for one.

(6,831 posts)Justice Kennedy for putting us in this decision.
The women of America especially want to thank you for allowing them to be re-traumatized all over again by a man you knew was a raging, abusive alcoholic.
We'll make sure that footnote goes into your biography.

Anthony Kennedy can't pull the switch on the electric chair in which our democracy was sitting, and then bemoan its subsequent demise.

So he now wants other people to say and pick up the task of saving democracy? When he did nothing except take the easy way? Even now he's too much of a weakling to do anything.
