Reuters: Democratic Party sources and strategists say they know that if Trump fires Rosenstein, he will ignite a firestorm of accusations that the president is attempting to shut down the investigation into Russias role in the 2016 election he won.
That will likely bolster their argument that Democrats should gain power to serve as a check on the presidency.
This week, Trump is due to hold his first meeting with Rosenstein since a Sept. 21 New York Times report said he considered secretly recording the president as part of a possible effort to remove him from office.

(54,770 posts)probably won't, mainly because it's too late for trump to get away with it without hurting himself. Early last week, the consensus was that Rosenstein would be fired Thursday to change the news cycle from Kavanaugh hearing.
Truthfully, any other Prez would have fired Rosenstein immediately for his comments about wearing a wire, etc. Of course, no other Prez has been as corrupt/traitorous as trump. I think fact trump didn't fire him is trump knows he is on thin ice.

(22,037 posts)I've heard enough stories about this that, when coupled with the sense of humor Mr. Rosenstein has exhibited, I think he made the comments but they were sarcastic in nature.
Imagine there's a meeting of the DOJ officials shortly after Trump has assumed office. Trump has already demonstrated his unfitness for office and the officials are worrying about what to do. The discussion becomes somewhat free-wheeling and all kinds of things are brought up, including impeachment and invoking the 25th Amendment. Someone pushes Rosenstein on this issue. He replies, "Oh sure. Why don't I wire myself up and go talk with the president. He'll obviously confess to some crimes. Then we'll take the tape to some cabinet officers and convince them to overthrow the president. Yeah, that's the ticket!"
While my scenario is mere speculation, of course, it just doesn't strike me as realistic that a career employee of the Justice Department would go outside of the hierarchy of their agency.
This is why I think Trump will just drop the issue.
Just my opinion.

(5,586 posts)My suspicion is that Rosenstein will resign in November, sometime after the mid-terms.
