TED CRUZ DECLINES, SO CHALLENGER BETO OROURKE GETS AN HOUR ON NATIONAL TV BY HIMSELFAuthor: Anna M. Tinsley, Star Telegram
Published: 10/09/18
CNN is shining a light on three of the most consequential races in 2018 including the Texas bid for U.S. Senate through debates or town halls in the coming weeks.
But Texans wont get to see incumbent Republican U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz and Democratic challenger U.S. Rep. Beto ORourke of El Paso face off in this series.
The Cruz campaign did not immediately respond Tuesday afternoon to a request on why the senator will not participate.
The solo town hall will air at 9 a.m. Oct. 18 and be televised from the McAllen Performing Arts Center.
Cruz and ORourke, who did participate in a Sept. 21 debate at SMU, are expected to square off at least one more time in an Oct. 16 debate in San Antonio.

(1,406 posts)Maybe Ted's super stealth-like strategy is to show up at the last minute, thus throwing BETO off his game.
Yup I bet that's it

(22,480 posts)apparently that is what Cruz does best and if he can't do it he doesn't want to play.
He, Cruz, is really despicable

(7,596 posts)Cruz has a 12% point lead, according to the NYT.
O'Rourke is a great candidate and Cruz is a wretched one, but it seems even that isn't enough to overcome the asinine anti-Democratic sentiment these red states have. I'm convinced they would vote for Hitler's reanimated corpse if he had an "R" next to his name.
I am not very optimistic either.
I never brought the hype that the race was competitive. Forcing Republicans to spend money in Texas was an accompaniment thought.

(9,988 posts)The conservative Texas Republicans would vote for a dog before they would vote for a Democrat. Local polls have shown a much tighter race, with Beto somewhere from 2 to 6 points behind Cruz. That said, Beto appeals to younger voters who may not be polled as often, and Cruz has a high unfavorability rating in the state. As usual, the task is to get our side to go vote.

(12,132 posts)and I graduated from a very conservative (fundamentalist baptist) christian high school in 1981.
I can tell you I was absolutely stunned to see on facebook where 2 of my classmates were openly supporting Beto. They were catching some heat from others but standing their ground - so to speak - very well.
I know 2 ain't much but it's 2 more than I ever expected. I know these folks are still deeply religious but they are seeing things in their religion (the part governed by right-wing extremists) that don't sit well with them and they are pushing back. I sent them love and encouragement for whatever that is worth to them. At least they know they aren't alone among graduates of our school.

(9,988 posts)I follow the discussions going on in the statehouse where last year the big debate for weeks on end was about a bathroom bill. For years, I attended state Board of Education meetings as part of my work. Believe it or not, the current board is a bit less radical, but it was hard to believe some of the absolute garbage coming from the rabid Republicans on the board when I attended meetings. They were all for getting rid of evolution and teaching creationism and pushing any curriculum that glorified only the deeds of white males. History is still whitewashed in this state. This is the state where a publisher of a history textbook chose to print that Africans immigrated here to work, until a parent noted that the lesson was describing slavery without using the term and raised a fuss. In spite of the fact that Texas belonged to Mexico at some point, they refused to consider that Mexican-American history might have some place in the curriculum until recent years. In other words, its still a mess and will remain so in the foreseeable future!

(10,156 posts)I've seen polls with Beto ahead slightly. I'll never believe polls at this rate.

(42,770 posts)college kids too. We went to see him at a huge park in downtown Austin and there were thousands of young voters - all with Beto shirts on. I think to that since he has visited all the counties he may pick up some hidden red voters that have never before existed. He's so non-confrontational.

(1,291 posts)Cruz is making this choice because he feels that he has more to lose than gain at this point by their appearing on the stage together again as equals. Cruz is a heinous douchebag, bug a shrewd heinous douchebag.

(1,291 posts)If you're polling ahead, conventional wisdom would be not to debate and possibly change that dynamic. It's why there were no Presidential debates after Kennedy/Nixon for 16 years until Ford/Carter in 1976.

(48 posts)The heavy suppression of voters. But, still, it felt like Kerry had the race. Machines had been installed, the corporations run by strong conservative advocates and contributors. Machines were flipping votes in Texas and other states Vote Kerry and would flip to Bush. Four corrections later, and the person could not get Kerry. I remember back to that night, on election and about 5-6 eastern time, something happened. Bush and the family were in some family room, and little girls in fru fru dresses. But, when they cut back to the election, after this break with Bush family, everything had changed in the race. The whole feel, the energy had shifted. Was like, Rove flipped the switch or something.
Clinton's was different, and later.
Cruz not going to any more debates tells me he is feeling comfortable again, and I haven't heard any more on the desperate visit from Trump, to Texas to campaign for a desperate Cruz.
Do they really believe their own propaganda that Kav is a win for them? Or, did they flip the switch even before the election begins, this time. You know. With what FBI did? We have literally lost the threat of the FBI for criminal behavior, with these people.
Or are they that stupid to believe, Kav is their win and arrogantly puff out their chests, walking confident. They do like to create non reality. They have done it over and over these last two years.

(3,784 posts)It would have been a stunt similar to Clint Eastwood's "empty chair" stunt, but this one would have actually been funny and/or powerful. Maybe even play the "Brave Sir Robin ran away" clip from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. At the very least, I hope he made some reference to, "'Texas Tough' Ted Cruz is scared to come here and face you, but I'm not."

(58,785 posts)Listening to Ms. Mooneys story, the four other evangelical moms standing around a kitchen island began to buzz with excitement. All of them go to similarly conservative churches in Dallas. All are longtime Republican voters, solely because they oppose abortion rights. Only one broke ranks to vote for Hillary Clinton in 2016. But this November, they have all decided to vote for Mr. ORourke, the Democratic upstart who is on the front line of trying to upend politics in deep-red Texas.
In the Senate race, one of the most unexpectedly tight in the nation, any small shift among evangelical voters long a stable base for Republicans could be a significant loss for Mr. Cruz, who, like President Trump, has made white evangelicals the bulwark of his support.
To Democrats nationwide, who have largely written off white evangelical voters, it also sends a signal not just for the midterms but also for the 2020 presidential campaign that there are female, religious voters who are open to some of their partys candidates.
The women, who are all in their 30s, described Mr. ORourke as providing a stark moral contrast to Mr. Trump, whose policies and behavior they see as fundamentally anti-Christian, especially separating immigrant children from their parents at the border, banning many Muslim refugees and disrespecting women.
I care as much about babies at the border as I do about babies in the womb, said Tess Clarke, one of Ms. Mooneys friends, confessing that she was mortified at how she used to vote, because she had only considered abortion policy. Weve been asleep. Now, weve woke up.

(58,785 posts)I know it'd definitely work that way for me. Beto makes me feel positive and reminds me of why I'm a Democrat.
For me, Cruz-revulsion is a combo of what he is himself and what his voters have become. I have a strong stomach but OD'd anyway a long ago.
Bfd
(1,406 posts)That's the degree of revulsion I have for him.
I know what BETO stands for & can read about him anytime, so its a small sacrifice to avoid Ted Cruz.
But an hour of BETO by himself , on TV, I will definately be watching this one. Will record it for replay too
