more than half of them became President without being elected by the majority of voting Americans. Only Reagan and Bush 41 came into office with a popular vote election win. Did anyone here realize this?

(664 posts)I said "my voting life" to make that clear (I thought). Of the five Republicans after him who became President, only Reagan and Bush I came into office with a popular vote majority.

(1,822 posts)But I get what you mean. Really theres only 4 GOP presidents in your life so 50% did and 50% didnt.

(58,707 posts)Most Presidents get more votes in re-election than when first elected.

(664 posts)Bush 43 would not have been re-elected if he wasn't all ready President. I did say "came into office". And I was of voting age while Ford was in office; he became President without a vote. Three out of the last five Republican Presidents were not decided by the people and you guys wanna get technical. I'm kinda sorry I posted this.

(3,803 posts)you are not 57 years old. Ford left office before you were 16 years old.

(2,895 posts)I'm pretty sick of hearing that all those "excess" votes from California shouldn't count for anything. I don't see why states with so few people in them should have such an outsized effect in the Senate or why those rural areas with so few people in them should have such an outsized effect in the House... and since the number of Electoral College electors for each state is the number of representatives plus the two senators, the outsized effect continues into the executive branch. Also, Washington DC should have a full representative in the House and two Senate seats. (Not to mention Puerto Rico...)

(22,976 posts)And counts fewer than 4 million people TOTAL in those six states, but with the representation of 12 senators between them.
California's population is nearly 40 million, with the representation of 2 senators.
In what universe is that equal or fair? Talk about the tail wagging the dog.

(51,627 posts)for over a year. It is brought up when discussing how we have lost the current SCOTUS due to GOP cheating and lying to get elections won ever since Reagun. 6 out of the last 7 elections the Dems won the popular vote...this has been a GOP set-up since Reagun. We have corporations contributing to elections since they are "people" and propaganda stations on TV with free reign to lie non stop for the GOP. We have churches and religions with more political and financial power and the NRA is allowed to finance political campaigns. Bill Maher said last week that if the popular vote presidents were allowed to be president 7 of the 9 justices would be Dem justices.

(82,383 posts)that allow a minority to have disproportionate power, rural people. The Electoral College and the Senate do that. Even the House - I read somewhere that Democrats got more votes overall, yet the Rs have a house majority. I would think districts would be drawn to have the same population for each district. The House should have more like 1000 members with the current population.
