Beto O'Rourke Makes Brilliant Case For Why Democrats Should Move Forward With Impeachment

From the article:

When asked if he changed his mind on voting to impeach Trump, O’Rourke said:
I haven’t. Let me put it this way: There may be an open question as to whether the president, then the candidate, sought to collude with the Russian government in 2016, but to quote George Will, very conservative columnist, when we saw him on that stage in Helsinki defending Vladimir Putin, the head of the country that attacked our democracy in 2016 instead of this country and its citizens and this amazing democracy, that was collusion in action. You may have wondered when he fired James Comey, the principal investigator into what happened in that election, whether that was an attempt to obstruct justice. But when by broad daylight, on Twitter, he asked his attorney general, Jeff Sessions, to end the Russia investigation, I would say that’s obstruction in action. … The best course to get there so that every member has all the facts and that they are compelling enough to do the right thing is to allow the full Independence and integrity of the Bob Mueller investigation. … I would liken impeachment to an indictment. There is enough there to proceed with the trial for a full vetting of the facts and to make the best-informed decision in the interests of this country and our future.

in Texas where ORourke is a long shot to begin with. You never give the otgerside reasons to come out to vote unless you want to lose

3. I cringed when I heard him on CNN liken impeachment to an indictment.

I think impeachment is a far more serious judgment than what he likens it to - simply a vote to have a trial in the Senate to get a "full vetting of the facts". I have always considered impeachment to be nothing less than a declaration by the House of Representatives that a majority of its members believe the President should be removed from office.

6. Good and bad in this statement

Good meat for the base, bad for his Senate prospects in TX, not going to play well with the middle and right leaning independents he needs. "Beto supports impeachment" is Cruz's primary ad going forward and that's all they will hear, not the entire nuanced explanation.

A DA or AG rarely brings an indictment without a solid case that can achieve a conviction.

17. Trump has taken impeachable actions countless times, easy.

We need to fashion a strong response and deal with it. Impeachable actions aren't merely technical offenses. They sacrifice the health of the Spirit of the USA in deference to personal and/or foreign interests.
