That IS their “base”.

They know they can lie to people who will never take the time to fact-check them. They build entire campaigns around non-facts and bogus statistics, because they know their adherents are too dumb to catch on.

Seriously, I think a tremendous amount of Trump’s appeal is that he validates the stupidity of his supporters. They see a man who is illiterate, a man who doesn’t understand how gov’t works, a man who is poorly educated, a man who has never read a book in his life, a man who isn’t the least bit interested in what goes on in the world – and they think , “Wow! This guy is just like us!”
