Its not true, and its how they manipulate the voters by claiming its this high when it clearly isn't. They gin up response , attention, and followers by doing this to the people. Media isn't helping the American people by repeating their propaganda either but keep doing it anyway.

said they want Republicans to retain majorities.

That seems like a contradiction for a poll that implies approval but trump, but at the same time do not want republican control of congress

those tens of millions of Trump supporters and worshipers are going nowhere.
Plus, they tend to vote in elections like it was their duty without needing to be excited and motivated like too many on the Left. This is a war and only the side that perseveres and doesn't weary of the battles will prevail and I'm not sure that enough on the Left are up to the kind of dedication it will take not to be brought low by Republicans as has happened since 2016.

I'm always amazed that people trot out one poll and use that to make a point. Any given poll is inaccurate and has bias. RCP average of polls is the best resource - basic statistics. There is little doubt that the core support for Trump remains intact in the 40%-45% range.

Reality is that human beings ARE stupid, in many different ways. It's a fantasy that we are evolved logical creatures that are bright enough to govern themselves. All you have to do is pick up any history book to understand exactly how stupid (or savage) we really are. Centuries of wars around the world, a horrific Civil War right here on our soil a mere 160 years ago.

We were lucky to have a short Golden Era in the decades after WWII when the lessons were fresh. Now that they are largely forgotten the neo-fascists and anarchists have emerged again to motivate the low information electorate, as we are seeing with success of the Trump movement.

I'd like to be more optimistic but I think there are going to be some dark days ahead for the USA. We'll see.

538 dot com, trump rating pretty stable

Why do so many like Trump, whether it is 40 or 47? Strong authoritarians protecting us from surging darkies have always appealed to many. George Wallace lost to John Patterson in the 1958 primary and vowed to never be out niggered again. It worked for Wallace, and it works for Trump. Running against the darkies always gets a lot of votes. Caravans, build a wall. Lotta votes there.

or I might even say an unhealthy, and I would think contrary to their stated religious tenets, idolatry of the orange thing.

This is a small sample, almost entirely consisting of relatives and old acquaintances of my wife's, but it just seems to be all the people who belong to one evangelical church or another...every single one of them talks about fuckface as if he's the Second Coming, rather than the Anti-Christ from their story-book that he so obviously more closely resembles.

So we have an unholy alliance between wealthy corporate interests, white supremacists, and evangelical "Christians," which represents an unfortunately larger-than-I-ever-thought-it-was cross-section of our society. And most if not all of these groups (which are not by any means mutually exclusive; particularly the last two) have been additionally influenced by the Russian government and elements of organized crime.

I am not shocked at this level of support. Saddened with respect to the true nature of American culture in this respect, its ugliness on display for the whole world to be dismayed at, but I'm not surprised...religion and racism are powerful tools of mind control, and it's all too easy to manipulate people's greed and self-interest.

What's wrong with a fair lot of these people in my opinion is that they've been brainwashed.
