by Tamar Auber | Oct 21st, 2018, 10:25 pm
During a barb-filled exchange during the CNN televised Florida Governors Debate between Ron DeSantis and Andrew Gillum, Democratic Tallahassee mayor Gillum told his opponent that he had to bring his facts because it was not Fox News.
DeSantis started by saying that one of the problems Gillum has is that he is presiding over a city thats out of control in terms of crime. When you have the record number of murders, in fact, the guy running to succeed him as mayor was his former chief of staff and hes sending out literature to voters saying most murders in history last year, something needs to change. He added: Andrew couldnt keep Tallahassee safe, hes not the guy to keep Florida families safe.
Ron is being Don, and thats Donald Trump, neglecting all sense of reason and facts, Gillum replied. I preside over a city thats experiencing a five-year low in our crime rate on trajectory to be at a 20-year low in our crime rate.
Then he said this: This is CNN, not Fox. You have to bring facts to the conversation.

(6,916 posts)So many Americans have been brainwashed by Fox and Limbaugh. Its often not worth talking politics with the GOP base - much more productive to talk to them about the lies of Fox and rightwing radio.
If youve got Trumpite family or friends, watch The Brainwashing of My Dad for a great description of the problem and how to fix it- how to talk to the brainwashed.

(748 posts)According to records kept by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, violent crime in Leon County decreased 11 percent from 2014-2017 and Property Crime decreased 1 percent in that same time.
According to the Federal Bureau of Investigations Uniform Crime Report, Leon County did see a spike in murders in 2017 reaching a record high of 22, but almost every other number was lower.
22 is a pretty small number, so you're going to see statistical fluctuation no matter what you do. The overall, year over year rate is more important.

(31,261 posts)issue. It could be that Gillum thinks that even ONE murder per year is too much. He may know that even though murders may have spiked, the city's total population spiked even more, so per capital the murder rate would be lower than a previous year. Gillum may know that the murders three to five years into his administration are largely the result of past poor administration, policing and community engagement, him knowing that to positively impact a murder rate 10 years in the future, he must have police and community leaders interaction with kids ten years old and younger, him knowing that the impact on those older may already have limits. The answer that Gillum would had to give would have been complicated with plenty of variables, maybe that is why he didn't try to flesh it out to the idiot DeSantis.

So statistics...

(18,470 posts)Because of the small population and high number of visitors it causes some statistical anomalies.

(5,644 posts)DeSantis answered, His son Mason would laugh at anything and he's a good kid but he wouldnt read the Art of the Deal to him, but Trump did a good job moving the embassy to Jerusalem, and no other President has done it but Trump. and he said that Gillum was against it.
Gillum says I'm confused, what was the question again.
Tapper: Is Trump a good role model.
Gillum: that's what I thought. No, he's not a good role- model, Trump is a bully and DeSantis is trying out for the apprentice...

(54,392 posts)This needs to be said on national media over and over and over and over again!!!
Fox can't sue for defamation due to the over-abundance of proof they lie frequently and deliberately.
The 30% need to hear that Fox feeds them lies until they start to asl whether or not it might actually true. To the logical next question as to "Why?" THEN they might listen to the news they have so far refused to hear: "because if people believe the lies Fox tells them, they can be convinced to vote against their own interests--just as YOU have been doing to yourselves these last 20 years!"
