Massive Turnout Makes the Midterms Unpredictable

October 22, 2018 at 8:50 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

First Read notes “there is one unmistakable finding in our poll: Turnout is going to be sky-high this midterm season, surpassing vote totals from previous midterm cycles. And that record turnout means that the eventual outcome in November is likely to be unpredictable.”

“The turnout we’ll see in two weeks will be unprecedented for a midterm. The money we’re seeing — especially from Democratic candidates — is unprecedented. Also unprecedented is the fact that the sitting president is embracing that the midterms are a referendum on him.”

“And it all underscores that this election has no real historical comparison — not 2006, 2010 or 2014. Get ready to be surprised.”

been true for decades. Repubs turn out their diehard base, which is shrinking. Dems turn out "middle of the road" voters who want rational governance.

By order of the present occupant of the White House. New draft rules were submitted by the Democrats, but Congress will not act until after the election.

That large turnout could provide surprises across the aisle. I don't have a good feeling about this election, and I'd feel the same way if I was a republican. We could win some important ones and lose some important ones. And Trump will declare a "victory" if he merely holds onto the Senate.

That said, "generally" a large turnout is good for democrats.

And the line was HUGE! Many , many women, and minorities , and Beto supporters , and openly discussed how many hate cruz and trump now . It brought a big smile to my face seeing and hearing all of this. Very few remained quiet, which could mean they were for corrupt ted and trump. I think putin will have to change a huge number of votes to get ted a win this time. No wonder trump's so desperate he has to already start setting up his next line of excuses with when he loses the referendum on himself and all the people he backed, and it proves someones lying with their polls. Vote them all out of office people, criminals have no place in OUR government .

You say people were openly discussing how much they hate Cruz and trump? Are you KIDDING me?

I've never heard of such a thing! Hot damn this makes my day!

Thanks SO much for posting!

Hey, you observed lots of women and minorities, I'm curious, did you happen to notice any young people?

Can you say what time were you in line to vote please? Thanks!
