Jamal Khashoggi had an uncle, name of Adnan Khashoggi, who was an arms dealer. That guy died last year at age 81.
Good article about him on Wiki....https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adnan_Khashoggi
So, Adnan had a yacht, the Nabila, which was the largest in the world at the time and was used in the James Bond film Never Say Never Again.
He later sold the yacht to the Sultan of Brunei, who in turn sold it for $29 million to Donald Trump, who sold it for $20 million to Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal as part of a deal to keep his Taj Mahal casino out of bankruptcy.
And Adnan's sister was the mother of....Dodi Fayed,, who was killed along with Princess Dianah in that Paris car wreck.
It's a big club, in a small world, it seems.
edited to add:
Trump bought the yacht, because it was then a record size. He re-named it Princess, and docked it near his Atlantic City casinos, used it for private parties, etc.
The docking fees were something like 400,000, which he paid to his own corporation, which was paying him....
so in effect, he paid himself the money, but it was deductible as a business expense.

(60,010 posts)6. Also this from Wiki:
In 1988, Khashoggi was arrested in Switzerland, accused of concealing funds, and held for three months.
Khashoggi stopped fighting extradition when the U.S. prosecutors reduced the charges to obstruction of justice and mail fraud and dropped the more serious charges of racketeering and conspiracy.
In 1990, a United States federal jury in Manhattan acquitted Khashoggi and Imelda Marcos, widow of the exiled Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos, of racketeering and fraud.

So I can see why he had to sell that yacht.

I'm surprised more people here don't seem to remember him.
American University in DC named a building after him, since he was a particularly generous donor. They since changed the name of that building.
But, Khashoggi was a quite well-connected arms dealer, and his family was quite wealthy as a consequence of that business.
