With so many close races from local to state and with so many problems with legitimate voting and cheating at the polls, when will we know the final tallies of the elections? A day, three days, a week?
I have a feeling it will be in limbo for days...should I stock up on Xanax and whiskey now?

(6,110 posts)you complain of occasional anxiety attacks.
To be clear, I hate taking any medications. After jogging in Santa Fe, NM, which is 8000 feet above sea level, I experienced horrible irregular heart rhythm. It was 4 cups of coffee+glass of wine+jogging+8000 feet = deadly combination for a visitor. I was in panic since never had this problem before. Called 911 and ended up in ER of the hospital. The doc there gave me a pill of Xanax, and like a miracle, my heart was normal and anxiety was gone.
Xanax is one of those rare pills which does not upset my stomach. Even aspirin does. And a 30 pill Rx lasts me 5 to 7 years, since I take it only if in panic attack situation. One tiny pill does that! Which is why I call it the miracle drug.

(51,587 posts)I would get a bag, paper or plastic, and breathe into it for a few min. It worked.

(6,110 posts)In my case the first panic attack was due to drinking coffee at high altitude.
I had no problem breathing, but the caffeine screwed up my heart rhythm
and that caused me to really panic into thinking I was having a heart attack.

(51,587 posts)since I was sound asleep and nothing was "wrong" or upsetting in my life. The second one I had I swore was a heart attack and drove myself to the hopsital but by the time I got there I was back to normal. I still had never heard of a panic attack before.

(130,877 posts)Will likely take a full day, and then there's Mississippi = Espy,
Mississippi Senate special election could go to a runoff as Democrat Espy tries for upset: NBC News/Marist poll
A Senate special election in Mississippi could be headed for a runoff as voters pick a replacement for retired Republican Sen. Thad Cochran.
If the race goes to a runoff, incumbent Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, who was appointed to fill Cochran's seat, appears to have an advantage over Democrat Mike Espy, according to a new poll.
Mississippi is one of only a few opportunities Democrats have in Senate races.

(2,120 posts)...dragging out a bogus recount against Al Franken. Dems had the prospect of a 60 vote majority and really lost their momentum on health care reform.

(30,736 posts)in many places. They will drag it out, shout about election fraud and maybe worse.
The lame duck Congress will raise as much hell as possible. I worry that they will drag their feet, or outright refuse to certify some of the elections.
There will be court battles.

(1,822 posts)Our polls close at 6 Eastern. It will likely be close between Donnelly and Braun, but if Donnelly can pull it out it will be a good night for the Dems. The conservatives in this area are fired up and if it doesnt push Braun over the top I'm guessing in much more purple and blue areas of the country we'll see good results.

(5,754 posts)It takes at least an hour, probably more, to close down the machines and verify the counts in each precinct. It will take me at least half an hour to drive to the county office. So, I'm guessing that I will be lucky to report by 8:30, more likely around 9. Then the county has to enter the numbers. So, that's why it takes awhile to hear from us.

(10,134 posts)approx 30 days to get their results to the Secretary of State, who then has a couple of extra days to produce the final, official count.
Realistically, for most of the races where there's a clear winner the Tuesday results (c. 8PM, after the polls close and the mail-in ballots that were received prior to election day are counted will give a good idea. However, there are some races where the margins will be so close that they''ll need to wait until all the mail-in ballots are received (which will be on Friday) and all provisional ballots are processed (which will be whenever). Los Angeles County usually takes a couple of weeks - they have over a million ballots to deal with in a typical election.

(48 posts)Senator Joe Donnelly is just barely the favorite. If he wins, that'll be important for Democratic prospects in the Senate, and a good sign of the night to come!

(146,288 posts)Folks willing to stay up late on Tuesday will probably know if we regained majority control of the House sometime around 2 AM.
If you value your sanity, just go to sleep at your usual time and check in the morning, when it's almost certain that decision will be available.
The Senate may take longer. The Majority may teeter on a couple of extremely close races. It could even result in a recount that finally decides which party has the majority. Or, it could be known on Wednesday.
State races will vary.
In any case, you should have answers about most races on the morning news on Wednesday.
I no longer stay up late watching election returns. The morning will come, and then I'll know.
