Duncan Hines has recalled some of its cake mixes - salmonella

The AP is reporting five cases of salmonella are linked to Duncan Hines cake mixes. Apparently people were eating the batter raw; the bacteria that causes salmonella is killed by baking it.

This is linked from Duncan Hines' website:

https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/duncan-hines-classic-white-classic-butter-golden-signature-confetti-and-classic-yellow-cake-mixes-recalled-due-to-potential-presence-of-salmonella-300744302.html?tc=eml_cleartime

The flavors recalled: Classic White, Confetti Cake, Butter Golden, Classic Yellow.

The specific "best if used by" dates recalled:

Classic White: from March 7, 2019 to March 12, 2019
Classic Yellow: from March 12, 2019 to March 13, 2019
Butter Golden: from March 7, 2019 to March 9, 2019
Confetti Cake: March 12 and 13, 2019

The manufacturer recommends you not use these mixes and to return them to the store where they were purchased.

Wouldn't it be the egg in the batter that is the problem?

How does any microbe live through the processing in the factory?

Did someone taint it with salmonella after processing?

As to the processing in the factory...cake mix isn't cooked at the factory, they just dump the raw ingredients into a food-safe concrete mixer, let it run for a half-hour or so to let all of them get stirred together well, and package it.
