So some of the same people who voted for D Sherrod Brown for
senate then turned around and voted for R DeWine as governor?

(13,417 posts)Nelson's race was supposed to be closer but Gillum was expected to win by a handful of points instead of losing by 1-2.

(46,703 posts)Dade and Broward didn't change the numbers for Gillum and Nelson at the end of the night, as it usually happens.

(13,417 posts)I honestly do not know what it is but what you described is exactly what happened to Clinton in 2016 in that part of the state.

Do you think that whatever was tampered with in 2016, never got dismantled and is still in operation?

(13,417 posts)It's like Stonehenge. The reality of what happened is too strange for most to believe which leaves the door open to other theories.
I definitely hope the pollsters do a post mortem on Florida given how it seem so to be the big miss tonight for them. A comparison to county level numbers from 2016 also should prove fascinating.

Ohio is a 'special' place.

(63,221 posts)There are a number of major corporations either headquartered or with major operations in that city, pulling in people from all over the world, so it's not the typical isolated mid-western city. What is your opinion on why it is so special? Just curious, as I would expect it to behave a little more like an East Coast city politically.

(14,249 posts)That's the fucking american electorate! Goddamn I wish peeps on this forum would take a minute to step out of their bubble. We (DU members) are an anomaly. We view politics strategically (albeit sometimes). We are engaged. Most of the electorate can't be bothered to learn the issues that effect them. They take pride in stating, "I don't vote for the party, I vote for the person." Not surprising at, all in my experience.

(6,679 posts)Everyone I've ever met raised in Ohio votes individuals, not party. I totally get a good deal voted for Sherrod Brown and also Mike Dewine. Disappointed, but I get it.

(5,126 posts)we were down some 250k with lots of votes left in Cuyahoga, Franklin, Hamilton, Lucas, Summit and as the percentage of precincts kept increasing, the margins did not. Almost all of the rural counties were at 100% reporting.
And right - Sherrod and Judges win but not other statewides?
We are fucked for redistricting. We are also fucked for medicaid expansion.

(34,066 posts)The only surprise is that Renacci came as close to Sherrod as he did. Sherrod is popular in Ohio (and has the statewide name recognition that Renacci doesn't) - and he supports some of Trump's trade practices (tarriffs, in particularly)
Similarly, for many people in Ohio DeWine has been a sympathetic figure since his daughter was killed in a car crash in 1993. He also has more name recognition in Ohio than Cordray (and has beaten him in the past). Cordray's stint in Washington as a government watch-dog won't win him many friends among some of the people who are fond of Brown for his stands on trade issues.
