The Acosta thing is not unimportant, but it IS a purposeful distraction.

Trump and Bill Shine knows how to manipulate the news cycle. The Acosta thing takes air time away from Sessions/Mueller and the election results, which quite frankly are much more important.

The White House saw an opportunity to distract, and they pounced on it.

Firing Sessions was throwing the match into the powderkeg. Stripping CNN's press credentials is squirting lighter fluid on the resulting blaze.
