Democrat Bill Nelson is suing the Florida Secretary of State and demanding the state count all provisional and mail-in ballots deemed to have a signature mismatch.
The legal challenge confronts a Florida law that requires county election officials to double check signatures of voters who cast provisional and mail-in ballots, and reject any that don't match state records.
Nelson's recount lawyer Marc Elias said the law puts the responsibility of signature review in the hands of untrained, unqualified local election workers and leads to the disqualification of legitimate ballots.
"This results in a complete lack of uniformity," Elias said. "Voters in one county are subject to one standard for reviewing signatures than others."

(33,643 posts)Same kinda thing AZ GOP is trying to pull with Arizona vote-counting, and I don't like it here either.
Seems like their may be an alternative, which is that all questioned ballots should be gathered and assessed by people truly qualified to do so ... at least by proposing it (if at all possible), it makes it look like he's trying to follow laws already in place, just do a better job at it.
The way this article reads ... does not reflect well on this attempt.
Stupid move, IMHO.

(14,565 posts)This is the first time I voted absentee in Florida. The signature aspect is ridiculous. It is on the outside of the envelope and the signature covers two sides of a flap. You start the signature on the left side and then run into a prominent flap, the one that seals the envelope.
It is an incredibly stupid design. Almost like you are trying to cause problems and disqualify votes.
I was very careful to sign on the right side of the flap only, even if it meant I had to condense my signature.
Two years ago while early voting I had my signature challenged in Miami, and was asked to sign again. That's how much of a stickler they are.
The poll workers here are mostly older white females and they seem to think people are trying to steal something. I had one of them bemoan to me about all the fraud going on.

(146,288 posts)I was serving in the USAF and was in the middle of a school they sent me to. So, I went through the registration process at my old home address and then got an absentee ballot and mailed it. I carefully checked the date restrictions and made sure everything would happen in time. Did my vote get counted? I have no idea. We didn't have any way to check back then. I assume it did.

(33,643 posts)I think this hands the Wingnuts a WONDERFUL (for them) 'talking point' ... ZOMG Dems are Manufacturing Votes!!!1!!
BTW, our side's BEST argument against requiring voter ID's ... is signature checking.
Now, we turn around and argue in Court 'hey actually this method doesn't work!'
WTF?!?
Pretty dumb move if you ask me, all around.
Asking the Judge for them to be sequestered and analyzed by professionals would be the far smarter move, don't just say 'These Must Be Counted Even If Sigs Don't Match!'.
I'm ASSUMING, however, the article is not BS/misrepresenting the situation, which is admittedly possible.
