Waiting for retractions from DUers who quickly jumped on the Carlson bandwagon the other day.

(3,344 posts)Are you saying you'd be fine with the proud boys knocking on your door, going back out to the street and chanting "we know where you sleep at night" through a megaphone?
Because that's what this guy is admitting happened.

(27,811 posts)I wouldn't like being told someone knew where I slept at night (particularly since once, many moons ago, I work up to a guy trying to come in my bedroom window).
Demsrule86
(68,576 posts)'concerned' that had that happened there would be arrests. The right to protest trump Tuckers comfort level. And he even lied about this.

(12,618 posts)One of the problems is we're always playing defense with these cretins. I'm okay with going on the offense for a change. People like Tucker and The Proud Boys have done unimaginable harm to our country. I'm okay with them having no safe space to retreat to.
Saying we're just as bad as them when things like this happen only plays into their hands and promotes a false equivalency.
Ms. Toad
(34,072 posts)Then it should not be a tactic we're using. And I thinks we should be calling out our own side when we stip out of line.
Refraining from engaging in offensive behavior - and condemning it whenever we see it - is not the same as saying we're just as bad as them.
Downtown Hound
(12,618 posts)Therefore, I've done nothing to deserve it. That is not the case with Tucker or the Proud Boys.
Again, a false equivalency. However, if it ever was done to me, let's just say that those who do it will remember that night for a long, long, time to come.
Ms. Toad
(34,072 posts)For which (if you were in a position similar to Carlson) you would - in their opinion - deserve veiled threats, doxing, and disruption of your private life.
If a tactic is wrong, it is wrong. It doesn't matter who is engaging in it.
Downtown Hound
(12,618 posts)Maybe letting them have sanctuary where they can rest and come back the next day to inflict new horrors on the world is what's wrong. Knowing what you know now about the Holocaust, would you think it wrong to do this to the Nazis in their early days, before they got as powerful as they did? Would you have said it was wrong for people to do everything in their power to stop fascism dead in its tracks before it could gain a foothold?
Ms. Toad
(34,072 posts)Everything seems justified when you believe you are in the right and that the other side poses a grave danger.
You are aware that Christine Blasey Ford is still unable to return home, and is still receiving death threats as a result of similar tactics directed at her, right?
Kavanaugh's supporters believe that she was politically motivated, and that she committed crimes for which she should be punished by lying under oath against him - and that these things justify threats (veiled or otherwise), doxing, and showing up at her workplace.
This is very similar behavior, directed at someone on our side, for what the other side believes are equally justified reasons.
I'm perfectly fine with being ever-present - quietly standing or walking in front of his home, his workplace, etc. It crosses the line when there are threats (veiled or otherwise - "I know where you sleep at night," and "we'll be back, you won't know when," .
As to the Nazis, there is a considerable distance between remaining silent in the face of evil - and engaging in tactis the Nazis themselves might have used in their early years.

(12,618 posts)I'd hardly call that "jumping straight to."
Ms. Toad
(34,072 posts)So yes - for most people - it is "jumping straight to"
Downtown Hound
(12,618 posts)And don't even pretend you do.
Now I'll repeat my earlier question. Knowing what you know now about the Nazis, would you have faulted people for doing this to them in the early days, before they had a chance to get the death camps running? Because sorry, simply saying, "I would not be silent in the face of evil" is not a good enough answer. It's good to know that you would speak up as millions were dragged away to their enslavement and death, but would you have been willing to do something more than just speak out? Because here's the way I see it, "speaking out" is important, but when faced with a grave and terrible threat, only speaking out is an excuse people use to justify their lack of taking stronger action. 10 million people died the concentration camps. And if that could have been prevented by a few hard core in your face you get no refuge types of resistance fighters not playing by the rules in the early days, I would consider that worth it. If on the other hand, you're willing to sacrifice 10 million people in the name of what consider "decency", then not only do I find that stupid and immoral, but also inherently indecent.

(1,900 posts)As you state very well, the golden rule doesn't apply to nazis and should not apply to nazis.
It's not like anyone is threatening Fucker Carlson's life. Unpleasant - yes.
I'm all for making BAD people feel uncomfortable. These people are B A D.
They rationalize putting kids in cages - cutting food programs - basically murdering
people by reducing medicaid - and if you think they wouldn't build
reeducation camps (or worse) for "liberals" if they had the fucking chance - you're dreaming.
No thanks. I've seen this movie. These are hostile B A D people.

(68,576 posts)me this. I had stickers on my van. Tucker is a liar for Trump. We have free speech and the right to protest too. How many pro-life crazies have picketed doctors and nurses...Tucker made excuses for them...so he has it coming.

(12,165 posts)But I'm not in the business of doing things that marginalize and demonize groups of people I don't like. Hopefully that's not something I need to worry about.
The more insidious threats come from Washington policy makers who quietly change our laws to favor the wealthy and white. And, not to mention the risks that African Americans must feel by just driving while black.
So, what happened to Carlson wasn't good. But I don't have a lot of sympathy, honestly.

A reporter for a conservative news Web site interrupted President Obamas announcement of a new immigration policy in the Rose Garden on Friday, drawing a rebuke from the visibly agitated president.
The reporter, who later identified himself as Neil Munro of the Daily Caller, shouted out questions while Obama was explaining that his administration will block deportations of young illegal immigrants. That prompted the president to respond: Not while Im speaking.
At the end of his remarks, however, Obama returned to Munro, who was standing in the press corps area of the manicured lawn outside the West Wing and had asked why Obamas new policy favored foreigners over American workers.
And the answer to your question, sir and the next time Id prefer you let me finish my statements before you ask that question is this is the right thing to do for the American people, Obama said, before Munro shouted out again. The president added: I didnt ask for an argument. Im answering your question.
Obama responded to that racist with class.
Fucker defended the interruption.
