De Gaulle fought on the Western Front and was a POW, WWI. JFK damn near died and had his health permanently ruined due to combat in the Pacific, WWII.

They had first hand experience with war and both were intelligent, thoughtful men. They weren't capable of insulting their brothers in arms. Even if neither had ever been near combat, they would have honored those who had.

The difference between class and crass.

I’m not sure how many people my age or younger know about what JFK did in WWII, but it is worth a quick read on Wikipedia.

JFK was initially ineligible to join the Navy in 1941 due to a lower back weakness/injury. However, he exercised and strengthened his back and was eventually allowed to join the Navy. That alone says a lot about his character, but his real strength is better illustrated by what happened to the craft he commanded, PT-109. It didn’t end there, either.

A guy like trump doesn’t deserve to be anywhere near a memorial on days like today.

as the "striped pants" set of elitists. But JFK's striped pants
were a sign of respect for the occasion and his host. This is, again,
what we have lost, our dignity and the respect of the world and
it's leaders. You couldn't explain this to The Donald if you tried.

Charles deGaulle’s birthday is November 22, same day JFK was murdered.

I only know this because my dear departed Dad’s birthday was November 22. In 1963 that was not a happy birthday.

It's such a grave travisty to have his hair put out of place by ragtag raindrops. It might mat down and reveal the true condition of his head. The hidden truth would be splayed before underlings, his alternate truth haphazardly disrupted.

Reagan Defends Cemetery Visit : Says German Dead Are Also Victims of Nazis
April 19, 1985|DON SHANNON | Times Staff Writer

?w=640

WASHINGTON — President Reagan, under attack from Jewish and veterans groups and members of both houses of Congress, Thursday defended his plans to visit a German military cemetery, saying the soldiers buried there were "victims of Nazism just as surely as the victims of the concentration camps."

Reagan's announcement earlier this week that he will also visit a Nazi concentration camp failed to calm the storm of criticism. The President, speaking to editors and broadcasters at a White House luncheon Thursday, said he does not want to cancel his plan to lay a wreath at the cemetery at Bitburg, West Germany, in part because it would appear that he had "caved in" to his critics.

He said that at the Bitburg cemetery, "we only found later that there were the graves of about 30 SS troops--they were the villains who conducted the executions and all."
