(59,503 posts)If Pence has problems, he will likely be replaced first as Agnew was. It would be interesting who would replace him, because as with Ford, the Senate knows it may well be giving consent to the next President by confirming him/her.
That said, if it could happen I think Nancy Pelosi, a brilliant politician who was able to break the glass ceiling as Speaker of a mostly male house would be an excellent First President. I also have a feeling that with the magnifying glass that comes with the Presidency, many might be surprised by what they actually see -- as opposed to the completely ridiculous stereotype. That the stereotype hasn't actually worked all that well, look at the fact that she has a good favorability rating compared to her Republican peers.

(245 posts)My thinking is Romney or even Graham. The key is to hold off a Democrat from entering the White House.
But this is pure speculation. Let's start January 3rd and get subpoenas ready and safeguard Muehller.

(52,205 posts)they would space them out by at least an hour, leaving enough time to appoint a new republican vice-president in between removals.
there's zero chance of the white house changing parties when it requires cooperation in the senate from the party that would be losing the white house.

(245 posts)The Speaker of the House and Democrat stated that since the country voted for a Republican administation, and discussed with Nixon to select Ford who was the Minority Leader of the House. I love Beto too, but I want Pelosi more. The idea of Speaker is more than just legislation. She will select the calender, oversee the investigations, assist in spreading the narrative and more importantly run the cover as a target to the McConnell wing and the Tangerine Tyrant.
Let her do her job as we do ours which I' believe is to focus on bringing to light the crimes of this administration and together we can all raise hell in 2020. Just IMHO but threads like this make us divisive rather than progressing towards a unifird goal.

(58,785 posts)I think Beto's charisma would be wasted on dealmaking behind the scenes, and he obviously is ready and wishing to move to the senate. The only reason most people even know Pelosi's name is that Republicans picked her to focus their hate on because she's our most powerful woman.
And as you're clearly aware, there's nothing to the job that someone couldn't pick up quickly, and it'd shuffle her out of authority and back into the crowd.
Speaking of that crowd of over 200 now, every 2 years a bunch of new people arrive. You will have intense competition from many who have been working hard to advance to more important positions by such things as developing usable expertise in grain agriculture, foreign trade, energy, education, tax policy, healthcare, budget, etc., plus groups of friends and potential supporters -- for however many years it takes to develop sufficient respect and admiration from colleagues to become their leader. Including proving that they're not corruptible. (That's kind of big, and not exactly something anyone can know about newcomers.)

Damn! You're a dream-killer, Hlthe2b.
Well, there goes that great idea, Le Gaucher. We're not going to be able to bury a new, exciting, charismatic national figure -- one who combines good judgement, ability to create coalitions, and good character! -- in the house of representatives in back rooms and committee meetings after all.

(4,602 posts)With the caveat that its unworkable
1) it would provide Beto with an excellent platform to run for Preeident
2) he is a hard target for the opposition
There would be some tangible benefits to doing this but the point is moot because its not going to happen.

(146,288 posts)Of all the ridiculous proposals people make on DU, suggesting that a non-member of the House of Representatives will ever be elected as Speaker is one of the most ridiculous.
Why on Earth would that body elect someone who was not part of the House to be Speaker? It simply makes no sense whatsoever.

(10,303 posts)She's the most qualified person for the job.
Part of me thinks this should be short term, as the Repubes have successfully demonized her in the public eye and not having Pelosi lead into the 2020 elections might knock some of the wind out of their sails. However there is no denying that Nancy Pelosi is a very effective Speaker.

(3,836 posts)as DNC Deputy Chair..
If Dems want to replace Pelosi so bad, and the Speaker doesn't need to be a House member.. why not go all out and place Hillary as Speaker? When trump & pence are removed by either indictment or impeachment... she can step in to the office she won.
karynnj
(59,503 posts)It would make him a prominent voice and give him a platform to speak for Democrats. He also ran an excellent race and likely learned a huge amount on things that were effective and some things that sounded great, but helped less.
However, Perez clearly did a good job - especially in areas that had been hopeless. He was more Dean than DWS. Unless he wanted to step down, I don't think replacing him makes sense. It is always good to go into elections with someone experienced and who has enough time to make systemic changes.
As to Hillary or Beto as Speaker, I think the number of Republicans who would vote yes on removing without a Republican in the VP slot is zero. If enough bad is found on Trump, we might get President Pence. If Pence isguilty, they have to remove him first and confirm a new acceptable VP. (Note it will take very big things to remove either Pence or Trump)

(3,836 posts)IMHO, Pelosi should be retained as Speaker. She is effective, she has built bridges and knows how to use them. She is a strong woman and to replace her with a male person right now would be the height of folly and lack of faith.
We women are triumphant.. no need to stifle our voices now..full rein, full speed ahead.

(13,305 posts)...I know it's sexism in action but I'm not sure why Pelosi always gets grief when Schumer is (to me at least) a terrible leader. Pelosi does what she does and lets the results stand for themselves. She is the definition of "speak softly and carry a big stick" to me.
Schumer to me talks and metaphorically struts around like he's a fighter or in a position of power and authority when nothing could be further from the truth. Yet I don't see even a fraction of the number of posts calling for him to step down or for someone else to take over.
