BY MORGAN GSTALTER - 11/12/18 08:57 PM EST
Democrats gained a veto-proof supermajority in both chambers of the California legislature on Monday after picking up two more seats in the state Senate.
Democrats Melisa Hurtado and Assemblywoman Anna Caballero were declared victors after vote totals were updated following last weeks election, The Associated Press reported.
The two female candidates won seats in the Fresno area. Hurtado won the open 12th seat and Caballero beat out California Sen. Andy Vidak (R) in the 14th District.
Democrats now have a two-thirds advantage in the 40-person Senate and in the 80-person Assembly.
The massive supermajority gives the party the ability to raise taxes, suspend legislative rules and override vetoes without Republican votes.

(13,305 posts)1. Do we NEED a veto proof supermajority in CA?
I mean is there anything we want that Newsom won't sign?
Don't get me wrong, it's always nice, but was it a concern in that particular state?

Due to ballot initiatives, the legislature has been hobbled in the past because a simple majority wasnt good enough to pass legislation. That is no longer an issue.

I honestly was under the impression that the GOP was almost a non-entity in CA in any capacity.
Good to know that's no longer an issue though.
