A Third Rail No More: Incoming House Democrats Embrace Gun Control

November 13, 20185:00 AM ET

The deadly mass shooting at a bar in Thousand Oaks, Calif., last week came less than a day after dozens of Democrats who campaigned on promises to strengthen gun laws were elected to the House of Representatives. Across the country, candidates from Virginia, Georgia, Texas and Washington State bluntly called for more gun safety, seemingly emboldened to take on the NRA.

In total, 95 candidates endorsed by Giffords PAC won seats in the House. Giffords PAC is the gun-violence prevention group founded by former Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and her husband.

Everytown for Gun Safety, the gun control group founded by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, pointed to equally successful results — an 83 percent win rate among its 66 endorsements in federal races.

Both groups insist that in contests where they took on incumbents supported by the NRA, they were more successful than the powerful gun lobby.

as long as we depend on Dem Senators from red/purple states for any majority. That's what happened after Sandy Hook - the Dems held the Senate and Harry Reid killed gun control.

The American people want common sense gun control.

Is it going to happen tomorrow? No.

But its gonna happen.

All of the dems just elected that are rated F by the NRA terrorist org are proof of that!

Can we call it "firearm regulation" (to track with the language of the Second Amendment) rather than "gun control" (which is the preferred language of the terrorist organization that wants to keep Americans shooting each other)?

Is an effective argument...

With emphasis on the words " common sense"

Responsible firearms owners aren't afraid of open and honest discussion...Democratic candidates shouldn't be either.

Health care seemed to be number one, education and economy a little less.

Maybe in 2020 we find out if Gun Control is a third rail.

I hope they can focus on Health, Education, Economy. Priorities.

12. Gun control is what derailed Obama's second term

The GOP were reeling after their "unskewed polls" bubble burst in 2012 and there were serious rumblings from the moderates that maybe now was the time to compromise on something like immigration. Then Newtown happened, and Obama got bullied into putting every last ounce of his reelection momentum into an all-out push for gun control. That rallied the GOP, they stood firm, Democrats were utterly defeated and Obama never recovered the initiative.
