At the risk of sounding like a Twitter crackpot: Does anyone besides me (a former Trump ghostwriter) feel like something is up with Trump, something big, something that involves his resignation? I detect an it-doesn't-matter-anymore vibe in his words and actions.

"Do you want [Whitaker] to rein in Robert Mueller?" (Abby) Phillip asked.
"What a stupid question that is," Trump responded. "What a stupid question."
"But I watch you a lot," the president continued. "You ask a lot of stupid questions."
Declining to answer, Trump then walked away from the gaggle as Phillip and other reporters shouted questions in response.

(35,667 posts)I immediately thought of dementia, more specifically Alzheimers. I'm a trustee for a very elderly aunt who is in assisted living. I have had to learn a thing or two about Alzheimers, and this is one of the things people with it do.
It gets worse. I wonder if he's received a diagnosis.

(7,947 posts)But with anyone else in the world, if we saw a press conference like the one after the election, we'd think, "This guy has a few screws loose." With Trump, just another performance.

(10,252 posts)He seems to be in a mentally paralyzing funk, a depression that he can't seem to rally from. All his appearances are backfiring. He can't seem to get his groove back. The press corp is getting snarky. The media is calling his bluff and saying mean things about him. And now, Mueller has convened a grand jury.
Surely he's thinking that he can just resign and say that America doesn't deserve his brilliance, or the Dems are plotting against him, or he's got cancer, or some such face-saving bullshit and resign. He'd rather be at one of his resorts playing golf and eating cheeseburgers.

(14,531 posts)stunt he pulled and people didn't respond to it the way he expected, he has gone to all out bully mode. Yet, it will get worse before he is gone.

(13,877 posts)Many people going to jail...many careers ruined...just a total wipeout, including some in his own family...not that he cares that much. But the Brand will forever be tarred. I think that's it more than anything. The only thing he cares about. He's probably reliving the shame of Fred Trump lording over him...not good enough.
He won the con, and I think he is or has lost his mind.

(45,002 posts)He ain't so smart with most things except serving his self-interest and saving his skin. He'll end up somewhere like Saudi Arabia, the Philippines or Russia where he's chummy with the dictators (as long as his money lasts).
Stupidest thing he ever did (in a long list) was run for office.
And, once he is out, he is of no further use to anyone and unwelcome everywhere.

(10,749 posts)I'm fine with him staying in office. He's the Democrats' gift that keeps on giving.
Plus, we don't really need a theocrat in the Oval Office. And I don't think the government would be any more productive or any less corrupt with Pence in office.

(13,877 posts)I believe I read that Paul Manafort pushed for Pence. Along with all the other, this should instruct.

(13,877 posts)money laundering, campaign fraud...and that Foundation...it's a gaping legal hole that will swallow his kids, too. I'm still wondering if the New York Attorney's offices will actually proceed. They've filed suit and there's plenty of evidence. Somehow, he's like teflon thus far, however. Never seen anything like it. The best con man in modern history???
But when the public evidence outweighs his bravado...which has seemingly declined into dark depression of late...I'm guessing he'll cut a deal and quit. Find a way to say he won, but be gone. He's not going to go to prison...and like Nixon, his crimes will outweigh his ability to bluster and his own party will help him go. Or at least, I hope. His narcissism will be his downfall. But I also think the Republican Party will watch him ultimately take them down with him, regardless of how it goes down. It's gone too far, IMO.

(37,648 posts)Any litigation will end up in an appeal on certain points. The S.Ct. will rule on those points. Kavanaugh, Alito, Thomas, & Gorsuch will likely view everything in a light favoring Trump. Chief Justice is a wild card.
If anyone tries to indict Trump, that goes to the S.Ct., where the same four know what to say, which is what Kavanaugh has said before: a sitting President can't be indicted.
If anyone tries to subpoena Trump, back they all go to the S.Ct.
And so on and so forth.
No one knows how those rulings will come down. But there are justices who are likely Trump loyalists.
But the OP was that he thinks Trump will quit. My response was "Never," because it's not in his dna, and he has the fix in place. It's not important whether the fix comes through as he expects. What's important is that Trump THINKS the S.Ct. will fix things. So he won't quit.
Also, as long as he is President, he is protected from indictments.

(31,261 posts)His calculation may be that a democratic led House will do correct oversight and expose his crimes. Better to cut and run and avoid the oversight, while getting a preemptive pardon from Pence.
