Michael Hayden: Only 'Legitimate Excuse' For Trump Skipping Veterans Cemetery is 'That He Was Dying'

Former CIA Director Hayden: Only ‘Legitimate Excuse’ For Trump Skipping Veterans Cemetery is ‘That He Was Dying’

by Aidan McLaughlin | Nov 16th, 2018, 8:41 am

Former CIA Director Michael Hayden condemned President Donald Trump for skipping out on a visit to a cemetery where Americans who fought in World War I were buried because of rain.

On CNN’s New Day, Hayden noted he was in France that weekend, to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of WWI, and visited the cemetery “despite the threatening weather.”

“As a practical matter,” Hayden continued, “if the president had his wits about him, he would have realized that the only legitimate excuse for not going to the battlefield was that he was dying, or that someone near him that he loved was in dire straits, like they were dying. Otherwise there is no excuse for not showing up there — giving the symbolism of his going and really, the tragic symbolism of his not going,” Hayden said.

The retired U.S. Air Force general added that Trump’s staff should have told him to visit Arlington Cemetery on Veterans Day. “It just boggles my mind that that didn’t happen,” Hayden said.

Hayden said that these actions, paired with Trump’s refusal to visit U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, “absolutely is a slight.”

He noted that while Trump’s approval rating amongst the military might appear high, the numbers “are historically low for a president of the United States.”

He should have been carried on a stretcher if he couldn't walk.

Only unconsciousness would excuse his appearance.

Like anyone would need to be told YOU HAVE TO GO. it was really the only reason he made the trip. That and the walk down the main drag in Paris with other actual leaders. Trump rode in a limo behind them.

In some ways I feel like the only thing that makes sense is that trump is in a bit of a hostage situation. Like he has no choice BUT to be the president. I feel like the only way he would pull this shit is to show the country that he really shouldn't be president, but that he is being held hostage as president by the people that own him.

Then I realize that the guy is just a fucking asshole that likely is being told what to do by the people that own him.
