(57,446 posts)Fourth Edition Prentice-Hall Handbook for Writers. It's from 1965. The first edition came out in 1951. I have a bunch of books like this. I used to find them at yard sales and rummage sales. It probably set me back a quarter.
It's probably for use in the tenth grade, eleventh grade, something like that.
It goes into such things.
Thanks for writing.

(4,066 posts)Not the fact that supporters of our President have decided frame him, defame and libel him. It's whether or not HE used the proper pronoun.
And people wonder why we lose to the GOP.

Id love to see this traced to Roger Stone or Jerome Corsi. Or others. I bet theres a few nogoodniks involved - probably working for trump. I bet Michael Cohen would know who they are. I suspect he used to specialize in black arts like this Togo on offense for trump. Probably even directed BY trump.

(57,446 posts)Whoever wrote that sentence (do you see what I did there?) assumed that the word immediately following the preposition "after" must be the object of that preposition.
In this example, the entire phrase "whoever perpetrated the bogus abuse story" is the object of the preposition. The phrase, by itself, has a subject and a predicate. The subject of that phrase is "whoever." The predicate of that phrase is "perpetrated the bogus abuse story." "Whoever," the subject, takes the subjective case.
It can get trickier. In an example like this, though, look at the entire phrase. Ask yourself, "what's the subject?"
Thanks for writing.

(115,693 posts)If Avenatti really was set up (which seems quite possible; you never know these days), he'd better be able to prove TMZ (and maybe others) published the story knowing it was false or with reckless disregard for the truth. He's made himself into a public figure so now he's stuck with New York Times v. Sullivan.

(21,848 posts)That could be failure to check the origin and truth of the story.
It would be accurate to report that he was arrested. However, my recollection is that TMZ gave additional details that the complaining party looked battered. That wasn't the term they used but that was the idea. If they failed to check that, then that would be reckless disregard for the truth.

(14,173 posts)maybe it is for whomever was the chump that the GOP got to start this. But in the long haul, the GOP know that that kind of stain never comes all the way out. Especially if they add another one or two invented scandals in time. You have to look no further than Hillary herself. One time voted the most admired woman in America, reduced to "crooked Hillary" for almost half the nation despite never being, I believe, even charged with a criminal offense.
This is meant not for us but for the Republican base, almost half the country. And perhaps even some Democrats. Something to stew in the minds if ever Avenatti decides to run for office. Just to add to any other hurdles he may have to tackle. Already, he has to first clear his name before he can be taken seriously as a guest talking about other things, on the MSM. And there will always be some who seeing his face now will have a visceral reaction. Republicans have learned, through Putin's troll farm, and their own troll farm, that simply the act of accusing does at least some damage.

(115,693 posts)Like you said, Mueller was constrained by his situation and had no choice but to stay quiet, but Avenatti isn't. I'm not a big fan of Avenatti but he is a bulldog, and if this was a fake claim (especially if the setup was as stupid and transparently phony as the one they tried with Mueller) he can easily find out and raise however much hell he wants.

(5,969 posts)First it was supposedly his ex who then came out and refuted it, then it was changed to another woman who isn't known yet. And apparently, now it's about a male victim. Make of that what you will.

(1,379 posts)But it seems hes emphasizing that he never abused hi ex wife Lisa (who TMZ did incorrectly initially identify), and never identifying who the alleged victim was.
To help prove his innocence, or that he is being framed, he can just release the police report, and refute that, instead of tweeting that TMZ is in trouble because he never abused wife.

(13,877 posts)if it was TMZ who broke this "news"...and the Avenatti-crazed media bought it...just dumb. To slander a capable defense attorney? What idiot thought that one up. They say that Wohl guy? But still...the MSM took it and ran with it. What is it about checking sources anymore? They may literally pay for this, if so. Even the police were vague.
Regardless how one feels about Avenatti personally, his family/young daughters don't deserve this. Period. Also, he was just acquitted of another legal matter, IIRC.
Maybe we should apply some "Kavanaugh Logic"...well, he denied it.

(13,877 posts)...sheer denial. His cheer leaders said that over and over, including the president. He was installed on the SC on the premise of "I didn't do it." even when most certainly believed there was a high likelihood that he did.
Hypocrisy...Avenatti is denying it publicly and was put in jail for a time...and still the farce goes on. Even the police don't have a "story" that I know of. Just that he was arrested.
I believe him, too.

(7,528 posts)There are reports that someone "saw a picture of bruises and red marks, and apparently, a security guard heard yelling to the effect of "I can't believe you would do this" and "she is the one who hit me first" with cursing and named Avenatti as the perp.
In CA, rules say if there is a domestic abuse call, someone is getting arrested for the safety of both parties. The police weren't called when it happened and didn't witness anything at the time, they were just tipped off and apparently, someone had given them enough for them to take him in the next day after the incident allegedly occurred.
Nobody knows who the victim is. TMZ first said "ex wife" and she posted a statement saying it wasn't her and she'd never experienced any abuse at the hands of Avenatti. TMZ changed to "a woman" but nobody has been named.
Jacob Wohl retweeted Surefire Security saying "Surefire strikes again" with a link to the story of Avenatti being arrested.
Avenatti posted bail, but that is normal - suspects are arrested and held and released if they posted bail, but I think there needs to be an actual victim to press charges for it to go to trial. Avenatti has not been convicted of anything.

(10,136 posts)Try showing up at an emergency room after injuring yourself at home: you get grilled on whether or not you feel safe, has your partner threatened you - no matter how much you tell them that you managed to harm yourself all on your own.
I don't know what the facts are in the Avenatti case: he could be a creep, he could be a victim of Trumpista dirty tricks.
crimycarny
(1,351 posts)As you stated, it's common for "suspects" to be arrested and released. I had always assumed that a suspect didn't get arrested for domestic violence unless there was concrete evidence--or at least substantial evidence--they had actually committed the offense. That was before two of my close friends were arrested (and mug shots taken) based on a mere accusation. Both of their "victims" eventually confessed they lied and the charges were dropped. I was shocked at how little it took for my friends' lives to be completely turned upside down. Both had to spend a lot of money to get their names cleared. Nothing happened to their victims for lying.
I'm not insinuating Avenetti is innocent simply because I like the guy, but I'm also keenly aware now of just how little is required to get the police to arrest someone.

(7,403 posts)Why has the arrest record not been released. What is up with that? Right now we have zero facts other than he is out on $50,000 bond so the charge is very serious, whatever it is. Something doesn't smell right, but what?
