John Lewis joins Ocasio-Cortez on climate change push

Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) is among a new group of lawmakers pledging support for incoming Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's (D-N.Y.) proposed plan to address climate change.

Lewis is the most high-profile lawmaker to back Ocasio-Cortez's call for a "Green New Deal," which calls for Democrats to craft a climate action plan that pushes for a 100 percent renewable energy economy.

In addition to Lewis, Democratic Reps. Earl Blumenauer (Ore.), Carolyn Maloney (N.Y.), José Serrano (N.Y.), as well as Reps.-elect Joe Neguse (Colo.), and Ayanna Pressley (Mass.) also just signed onto the proposal, according to Sunrise Movement, an environmental activist group.

Varshini Prakash, the founder of Sunrise Movement, said in a statement that the group is "honored" to have Lewis's support for the plan.

in an OP celebrating AOC and him joining her on her "Green New Deal". You brought it up, you should be able to explain how it relates to AOC.

I saw no one at DU booing JL at the time.

In fact, the only ones bringing this up seem to be doing little else than widening a specific divide... either consciously or not.

and fold into the same efforts the house is already pursuing, while encouraging Sunrise Movement's organization of young climate activists and supporters.

That's a very good sign because it started out as the radical Justice Democrats' New New Deal, a flagship cause requiring replacement of Democrats like Rep. Lewis and others mentioned here, as JD's Siamese twin organization, Brand New Congress, makes clear. It is their intent to ally left-wing populists with right-wing populists to create a brave new progressive world with, of course, a brand new congress. I did look and so far found no indication that the men who run both JD and BNP are involved with Sunrise Movement, so great.

One thing we know, Lewis all by himself is far too canny to empower or associate with those other groups or anything else he can't handle, so this looks like a very positive step. Climate change is beyond crisis stage.

When those 2016 presidential debates are reviewed a century or so from now, the lack of questioning regarding climate change will overwhelm all other perspectives combined.

How can you be there in real time and not sense the urgency?

knew it wasn't an issue they would win on. But they definitely knew that they had to win to do anything about it. As for your question, ask people around you tomorrow: How can you not feel the urgency? If it's at work, though, soft peddle it. Don't want you getting hauled in for a talking to.

Btw, claiming that everything is too late doesn't strike me as particularly more helpful than the answers you'll be getting tomorrow. If we don't stop it, 20 years from now you'll look back on now as before it got really bad.
