Nor will any other future Republican American president. And the reason is simple. Democrats will worry about a Dem president being jailed the next time the Republicans control the house and senate, -- jailed for any reason, made up, or real.
Republicans don't worry about such niceties. They tried their best to throw Clinton out of office, and then try him for perjury or whatever, and then "lock him up." We Dems don't inhabit the same moral planet as that on which Republicans live.
So the bottom line is that Dems will never try to prosecute Trump for whatever crimes Mueller uncovers, because they fear future retaliation.
We live in a country with two sets of rules: Republicans can do whatever they want to do; Democrats can't.
Disagree with the general, overall picture I've laid out here? Okay. Please state your view of the current reality in America.

And, yes. That "excuse" for not upholding the law sucks. All I can say is move to a planet where "absolute" justice, and "doing the right thing," prevails.
Please Email me when you've found it. I'll join you and we'll have a beer together. Or a joint. Or just sit and talk about living in a truly wonderful place.

(6,377 posts)And rich/powerful people don't go to jail. They just don't. People lower on the food chain, i.e. Manafort, Gates, Papadopoulous fall on their swords and go instead.
The 2008 crash taught us that. There were so many big names that should have been locked up for life. Instead, they got a slap on the wrist and kept going.
blueinredohio
(6,797 posts)But why even bother with a trial for people lower on the food chain if all they're going to get is two weeks or two months in jail. That's no punishment and a big waste of taxpayer money.

As you mention, I do think fear of retaliation is possible, although trump's case is so different from anything one can imagine. It's one thing to fear retaliation for actions taken in office that are more of a policy matter. It's another to screw with elections, go after opponents or journalists, manipulate matters while Prez to profit directly, etc.

(146,288 posts)One way or another, he's going to skate on it all. If he resigns, Pence will pardon him. If he doesn't get elected in 2020, he won't be charged. We're almost certainly not going to try, convict and imprison a former President. The precedent that would set would be very, very dangerous to ever President ever elected in the future.
That's unfortunate, but it's also reality.

(15,035 posts)As much as I wish this could be changed, it would be the same as asking whatever universal intelligence exists to change human nature. It ain't gonna' happen in our lifetimes. Then again, who knows?

(14,811 posts)(and I believe it will) even the spineless repubs will have no choice but desert him. The pols aren't with him because they like him, but because the fear he'll support a primary from the right. When he's down they'll kick him for sure.
Vinca
(50,269 posts)In fact, he's really backed into a corner now. The only way he definitely stays out of jail is to remain president. Sure, federal charges can be pardoned, but I think the State of New York is all over his finances and scam foundation. I think it's possible he goes to jail at some point.

(33,643 posts)Will he have a couple agents standing outside his cell at all times he's in it? Will they follow him everywhere, like, standing there guarding him in line at the Mess Hall, sunglasses on, wearing their suits, with their communication earpieces in place ... looking around in all directions for 'threats' i.e. making sure he's kept safe from other inmates, or ... how would that work exactly?

Obama has 8 years of SS protection.

(33,643 posts)So, same point/question.
At the VERY best we might get his ass on House Arrest somewhere, simply due to the logistics of the SS protection I think ...

(15,035 posts)I love that image of "inmate" Trump being protected by SS guys with sunglasses.
This would make an outstanding SNL skit. As with most great concepts, such as yours, the script writes itself.

(15,035 posts)have to see himself as a punchline. Let him see that sane humans regard him as a dangerous, toxic buffoon.
But the reality is that he will never pay attention to reality. He will always see himself as the greatest president in the history of the universe, and he will never "get it."
That's his sickness. That's who he is.
And who gives a fuck, as long as he's out of office and not a position to spread his poison.

(708 posts)Republicans already are trying to put Dems in jail; remember "lock her up" about Clinton? Nothing came of that. And Dems are already investigating Trump and have said they will pursue his tax records, etc when they get in. Furthermore state crimes can't be pardoned and Dems aren't the only group holding Trump accountable.

(5,790 posts)VP Agnew's plea deal allowed him to plead Nolo Contendere to a minor tax charge. He had to resign, but avoided all jail time and restitution.
Clinton plead guilty to a lesser charge for lying to the Grand Jury. He was disbarred (a non-issue, since it was doubtful he'd ever practice law) and he avoided any jail time.
Nixon was fully pardoned by Ford
Obama went out of his way not to hold war crimes trials.

(22,569 posts)It's simply delusional though to actually believe that Trump will go to prison.
It's like believing that when the Democrats that all of Congress and the White House that these tens of millions of Trump supporters will disappear--well they won't and that's reality as well.
