2. He's also the swing vote (as ridiculous as the notion of a swing vote is on today's court)

He's super conservative and rather partisan, but less so than Thomas, Alito, Gorsuch and BooferBoy.

And as Chief Justice, his name is associated with every decision SCOTUS renders (i.e. this era is "the Roberts Court" ).

I don't see Roberts going along with the absolutely overt Constitution shredding which Trump needs to survive unscathed. Some further disappointing degradation of Congressional and Judicial power in favor of the executive? Probably. But complete capitulation? No.

The most stunning thing about this John Roberts
statement is that he gave it to the AP, not during
public remarks or in a law journal or any of the myriad
ways he could have softened its edges. He wanted it
out there and now, through the front door.

I remember in 1998 when it was Rehnquist. A friend said that he hated Rehnquist for not dismissing it. It was not in his power to do so.

He'll be leaving office soon, and this hurt him going forward if it gets that far, because he knows now he can't win, can't bribe them or blackmail them, or threaten them into submission. He'll soon claim something made up about Roberts and others, that's his pattern.

6. Roberts only cares for Roberts and his own reputation

The Roberts Court is starting to look like a swamp of rightwing toadies eager to goosestep to the Heritage Foundation's fascist tune. Of course, that's what Roberts wants too but he's concerned how it will "look". History will not be kind to this era. Not at all.
