2. Reminds me of the story of the Whitmans in Washington State back in the 1800s

Good people at the core - they even took in all the Sager orphans. Raised and educated on the missionary ideal they just didn't have a clue and set off into a world of which they had no comprehension.

3. Christians would call a missionary of another faith Satan

It seems pretty obvious that Christians, or any religion, would call a missionary coming to them to try to convert them away from their current faith Satan or the equivalent of Satan in their particular religion. Christians just seem to be the religion with the most aggressive and obnoxious missionaries.

the Second Coming will occur when all people have had their chance to convert to Christianity. Could he have thought that he was reaching that very last group of people? It certainly seems silly of him to think anyone of them spoke any other language or that he could stay with them long enough to learn theirs.

What a stupid loss of life. How many laws did he break to force his religion on others? Just hiring the ship was breaking a law.
