There were more votes cast in the run off election than in the election on November 6, which is pretty unusual (particularly since every House seat as well as the other Senate seat in MS were on the ballot on November 6).
The two repub candidates on the ballot in November received 514,549 votes. Hyde-Smith, the only Republican on the ballot yesterday received 479,109 votes -- meaning a drop off of more than 35,000 in the number of Republican votes.
On the other hand, the two Democrats on the ballot in November received 372,818 votes, while yesterday, Espy received 410,298, meaning the total Democratic vote increased by over 38,000.
Some of those votes may have come from folks that previously voted Republican. Some may have come from voters who came out to vote yesterday who stayed at home in November.

(82,849 posts)Donors, volunteers, and other staffers don't just disappear unless the party neglects them. Mississippi Democrats can use Espy's campaign to build the party's electoral infrastructure and build support for Democratic policies and programs.
Or they can shrug in resignation, mutter "Eh, we tried," and let it melt away again.
