if you lie and cheat and steal and I lie and cheat and steal then it's ok to lie and cheat and steal bc that means everyone does it and therefore it's perfectly legal

those who need and/or desire to shred the limits of the law and the many it serves as written. We have an outstanding example in the Mueller investigation as it's being run carefully within the law. Kind of depends on what side of the law one's on, but it's only one big example of many, many thousands of cases.

No self-restraint, balls-to-the-wall until someone physically stops them. Rationalized by convincing themselves that "everyone does it."

Reminds me of their hysterical attacks on social programs. When they scream that recipients are "abusing" the programs, what they really mean is *they* would abuse the programs if given the chance and therefore everyone else would do the same.

To be fair to Solzhenitsyn, however, the mindset he describes is much more common among those who actually achieve power. The kind of person who would spend every waking moment trying to obtain and maintain power is also usually the kind of person who knows no boundaries except those which are imposed on him.

My friend's dad, a construction worker, was reading The Gulag Archipelago. That has stayed with me all these years.
