Since when is Iowa considered a "Primary"?

The media has been going on and on about the Iowa "primary", very seldom calling it the Iowa Caucus. We haven't had the usual explanation by the media of the difference between a primary and a caucus. Republicans have been trying for quite some time to unseat NH as the first primary state. Do you think this is their cute little way of doing it?
