(24,368 posts)I've got no love at all for Reagan. He was an actor through and through and his policies were ruinous to the middle class, but one thing you have to give him credit for as a president was that he did not put up with any shit.
If he was standing next to Putin and Trump back in Helsinki, he would probably have slapped Trump.

I Just think they would have got along fine. Remember Reagan's despised communism, Russia isn't communist anymore.
A HERETIC I AM
(24,368 posts)yeah, but Putin appears to be.
Google "Is Putin a Communist" and you'll get several articles suggesting he is, or at least thinks the old Soviet way of doing things was better.
But to be fair and more historically accurate, The Soviet Union was never truly communist either.
I once heard it referred to as "Leninistic Socialism".
He's a strongman, an autocrat, no matter how you slice it. And for that reason alone, I think Reagan would have been about as polite to him as Obama was.

(61,695 posts)They want Estonia, Latvia, Ukraine, etc and to dictate policy to the old Warsaw Pact nations. It's about money and l9cation of real estate with respect to waterways, etc. Communism has nothing to do with it as far as I can tell.

(24,324 posts)I actually 'smuggled' a musical score out through the Moscow airport by giving the security agent an American made pen. I kid you not. January 1985.
A HERETIC I AM
(24,368 posts)In the early 90's I worked for a firm that had offices in the engineering area of Detroit Diesel in Redford, MI.
A few of the guys had gone over to a Russian mine to install a large Detroit into a mining truck and had to go back a couple months later to follow up. The second time they took a shitload of those regular, run of the mill Bic pens, both the click style and regular. The Detroit guys gave a few away the first trip and they were an enormously well received gift and the mechanics and technicians over there thought they were priceless.
One of the engineers told me the Russian guy he worked closest with told him the rest of the people looked at that pen as something to be envied.
So when they went back, they took a couple thousand. Spent maybe a hundred bucks at an Office Depot.
Batteries too. D-cell, AA's, all of them. And small flashlights. A small, AAA battery powered flashlight that fits in your shirt pocket. Pure gold to them. Stuff like that.
So yeah, I believe you.
Edit to add;
It's not that it was just a pen or a flashlight or simple batteries, it was that the products WORKED.

(24,368 posts)Detroit Diesel Tech.
They were in the process of packing/boxing/crating up all the equipment, spare parts and whatnot they were going to need to do the followup on the engine install.
And yeah, now that I think of it, they did take a bunch of toilet paper with them!

(81,267 posts)Putin had a visible spring in his step. Smiling, eyes up, facing forward, looking so ON IT. On top of the world. Fit as a fiddle and ready for love. Like one would if one was in a position of dominance.
trump on the other hand almost trudged up onto the platform. Eyes downcast, huffing and puffing with some visible discomfort, frowning. Looking every day of his 70+ years. Constipated, even. Like hed just emerged from a rough and unproductive sit on the commode.
It was CLEAR who the Alpha was, of the two of them. And it sure wasnt donald.
I watched that body language and all I had for a takeaway was a big uh-oh...
Compare that with the photo of the facedown between Putin and Obama. Putin looked like a penitent acolyte standing before his stern task master. And having to look UP at his adversary - one of the most basic positions suggesting submissiveness. It was clear in that photo who was dominant, who was the Alpha. And it wasnt Putin.
Night and day difference.

(11,949 posts)President Obama would never use the language.
But even at such high levels, human interaction is meaningful. Body language matters.
It was clear every time President Obama met Putin he was not taking any shit.

The OP demonstrates the difference between President Obamas greeting of Putin with Trumps.

(35,675 posts)I think it's perfectly clear that this is the poster putting his/her spin on the nonverbal communication. I'm not big on the use of four-letter words but I thought it was funny. One reason it was funny is that it was clear this was the poster interpreting the n/v communication. Of course Obama wouldn't say anything like that.
BTW, speaking as an interpersonal communications teacher, people might be interested to know that many scholars believe we take as much as 65% of meaning from the nonverbal communication part of the message.
These pictures are remarkable. That Obama holds the power reins is indubitable. However, in the Trump pictures, one gets the feeling Trump is playing the part of the gracious host. "What can I do for you? Can I get you a drink? Anything else?"
In the Helsinki one, Trump appears as a supplicant.
This was a very interesting post. Thanks, OP.

(32,975 posts)Ever gave anyone that expression and body language.
Even when that awful Jan Brewer, former gov of Arizona stuck her finger in his face at that airport in 2012, his body language & facial features were still mild. Great restraint that man has.
"Indubitable". I love that word. I use it in conversations when appropriate. Points for using it today. I rarely have occasions to use 'absquatulate', another word I'm fond of.

Putin decided to just take Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 with impunity. If Russia or China decide to just take what they want, who's going to stop them?

As for the Obama photos - PBO never had a reason to shrink in front of Putin. Nor did he have any reason to smile.
