‘Whoops’: Conservative magazine retracts article saying student was punished for asking classmate on date after he is revealed to be stalker

The conservative National Review earlier in the week published an article claiming a student was disciplined under Title IX for asking his classmate on a date — without initially acknowledging that the student in question was found to be a stalker.

The story by Fox News contributor Kat Timpf claimed a Missouri college student “was deemed to have violated civil-rights law — and was guilty of sexual harassment — because he asked a female student out on a date that she did not want.”

“Why?” Timpf mused. “Because he was bigger than her, and his ‘physical size’ meant that ‘he was perceived as having power over her.'”

The disparity was first pointed out by civil rights attorney Andrew Fleischman, who noted that if the story had happened as the writer alleged, it “would be a great example of Title IX overreach” — if it were true.

“The article accurately quoted the deposition of the Title IX case, but it left out relevant details,” the note continued. “In fact, the male student had made repeated, unwelcome advances toward the female student and was found in violation of Title IX for stalking her.”
