Point out that the Republicans, who control the House and Senate, recessed both bodies last Thursday, thus preventing any possibility of a legislative solution to the shutdown until Congress reconvenes on January 3. In fact, in the House, Republicans blocked a vote Thursday on a Democratic proposal to reopen the government. So if the Republicans want to make it impossible to reopen the government between now and January 3, why shouldn't Pelosi go on vacation?
