First on CNN: Hundreds of TSA screeners, working without pay, calling out sick at major airports

Washington (CNN)Hundreds of Transportation Security Administration officers, who are required to work without paychecks through the partial government shutdown, have called out from work this week from at least four major airports, according to two senior agency officials and three TSA employee union officials.

The mass call outs could inevitably mean air travel is less secure, especially as the shutdown enters its second week with no clear end to the political stalemate in sight.

"This will definitely affect the flying public who we (are) sworn to protect," Hydrick Thomas, president of the national TSA employee union, told CNN.

At New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, as many as 170 TSA employees have called out each day this week, Thomas tells CNN. Officers from a morning shift were required to work extra hours to cover the gaps.

Trump is shutting down the government over a fake national security issue and creating an actual national security issue.

And I wouldn't have the sense of dread that they are going to scream at me this time for not moving along fast enough or poke around imy bra and panties for the umpteenth time.

If you aren't afraid to go to the mall, or church, or the movies, or a concert or a club, or a High School you needn't be anymore afraid of the airport.

Then, to ensure maximum security, everybody should have to go through secondary screening. Can't be too careful. Work to rule.

Lines out the doors, flights delayed or canceled, angry travelers everywhere.

Congress will act pretty fast at that point.

Can't blame low pay TSAs for walking out, esp. if they heard the news today that Trump and Pence just got a 10 K pay raise.

...but there's nothing illegal about catching a cold, or about being so worn out by worrying on how to make ends meet that your workrate slows down to a crawl...

A lot of right wingers keep saying that all those government workers are overpaid and unnecessary even though they have no clue what jobs/work government employees do exactly. Nobody going do anything until it affect regular people.

Currently, most Americans are not allowed to board a commercial flight without passing TSA screening. Once people start seeing hour long waits at TSA stations and/or miss their flights, they will demand better. Otherwise a lot of Americans will continue with daily lives. This goes the same for other furlough employees. Unfortunately, that is the way it is.

when you burn your sick time, then you are likely to get the no show voluntary quit status,or just friggin fired. Most of the TSA Managers are ex airline fuckups and are plain hard asses. Watched a couple of these Slugs in action, and if it was not for the Shop Stewart on shift, things would have gotten real ugly real fast.

I absolutely will never fly a commercial airline again. FUCK YOU TSA. You made my 90 year old mother take off her shoes and fucking frisked her.

The TSA protects NOTHING but their own jobs.
