McConnell blocks House bill to reopen government for second time

McConnell blocks House bill to reopen government for second time

https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/425414-mcconnell-blocks-house-bill-to-reopen-government-for-second-time

Senate Republicans blocked a House-passed package to reopen the federal government for a second time in as many weeks on Tuesday.

Democratic Sens. Chris Van Hollen (Md.) and Ben Cardin (Md.) asked for consent take up a package of bills that would reopen the federal government.

One bill would fund the Department of Homeland Security through Feb. 8, while the other would fund the rest of the impacted departments and agencies through Sept. 30, the end of the fiscal year.

Under Senate rules, any one senator can ask for consent to vote on or pass a bill, but any one senator can object. McConnell blocked the two bills, saying the Senate wouldn't "participate in something that doesn't lead to an outcome."

He knows, somehow, that a vote to reopen the government won't lead to an outcome? How does he know that?

Looks like the Senate needs a formal vote to override its Majority Leader.

My current theory is that he's given Trump a window: probably until JUST before the SOTU on the 29th. 2 more weeks to maximize the pain and histrionics.

Unless there's a purpose to giving the SOTU while the Fedurl Gubmint is shut down...

...and right now, I am too lazy to go back and find it, but the essence is that Trump's brain trust is putting their tiny collective heads together to come up with ways for Trump to use the SOTU to slam Dems over the shutdown and border security,
