Nancy Pelosi Jabbed the President* Right in His Tender Ego
The Speaker has rescinded Trump's invitation to address Congress because of the shutdown.

From what I read in The New York Times, it appears that Speaker Nancy Pelosi is not playing...
George Washington addressed a joint session of Congress but, two presidents later, Thomas Jefferson thought that too similar to the way things were done by the King of Great Britain in Parliament, so he took to sending a written message. That practice held until 1913, when Woodrow Wilson astounded the capital by delivering a speech. The one constant is that the president has to be invited to deliver the message to Congress. This president* just got himself uninvited. You can almost hear the weeping from the executive suites of the cable news outlets.

(86,580 posts)The worst he can come up with to show disrespect is to call her Nancy. He can't accept her title. She scares the hell out of him. She can tell him "NO" and it means "NO". That's got to be the worst thing for him to have to live with on a daily basis.
good.

(25,183 posts)Trump usually comes up with something, like Cryin' Chuck for Senator Schumer, but so far, he has refrained from calling her "Nasty Nancy" or something like that. There's a deep-seated reason for that, when it comes down to a man who is used to insulting women.

(37,648 posts)He's in the honeymoon phase. Trying to appeal to her better nature and woo her. Surely she will succumb to his charms, esp. once she sees his big hands up close.
If that doesn't work, he'll move to the derogatory nickname phase.
This is new for him, having a Congress he doesn't own. So he's feeling his way. He'll get used to it and revert to his regular juvenile ways.
but I really do think he's afraid of her. She's standing up to the bully.

(25,183 posts)into giving that speech in person, subjecting him to the boos of her Democratic members in Congress. There will be no message to "behave yourself" and that's being done for a purpose.
It might work, but there are a couple of dangers. First, Trump's base will attach even more to him once he is attacked in this way, and there is the chance of even more irrational behavior as a result of the humiliation.

(25,183 posts)that the formal invitation has been withdrawn, it sounded just like kind of caution to me.
If Trump is smart, he will indeed do the SOTU by a written document.
