Today at Pentagon in front of top commanders Trump blamed what he called Democratic "fringe" and "radical" left. and Speaker Pelosi for not acting on his border plans. Entire room stayed silent and did not applaud partisan remarks.

(28,941 posts)In spite of some of snarky remarks "shallow water sailors", the Coast Guard is well respected through out the service. Plus, if they're treated like this, we could be next.

(7,725 posts)It can be undone. DHS needs to be re-visited. It was a wartime addition for security. Seems like now DHS has gobbled up several perfectly good branches of the military to try to dig in like a tick. Patriot Act and DHS....no longer needed like they SAID we did in 2003 etc. Increased govt size by 18%. And growing.

However, as said it is a branch of the armed service.

This is a good sign. They are not supposed to be a political arm of any party, and should not ever ever be the cheering section for a potus on a rant.
They're not supposed to be political.

(12,858 posts)In the early days of his reign he did a few things the generals warned him against. His ploys succeeded, and from then on he was sure he knew more than the generals.
You nailed it. The military is supposed to be non-partisan, non-political. Of course in the real world politics inserts itself into the military just like any other organization. And military members are allowed to have political opinions just like anyone else.

(383 posts)I watched your posted clip. There were no 'applause lines' in Pres. Obama's speech as what Trump was wishing for in his. Obama's talk was about military operations and successes...nothing about domestic politics. Trump was on a rant against Pelosi and the Democrats. Why do that in front of a captive military audience? Yes, the commanders sitting with their hands in their laps after that rant means something. Exactly what I don't know. More importantly, what did it mean to Trump?

(15,324 posts)have made it clear to the fucking moron that our troops are not fucking pawns and props for his political bullshit.
I served 30 years in the Navy, and I NEVER once saw a politician come and give a speech that was even remotely "partisan".
It's never been fucking proper for them to do so. Only this asshat has take advantage of captive audience troops to provide cover for his political attacks.
I'm betting that the senior folks let the troops know that they WOULD NOT react to partisan attacks.

(492 posts)I served 6 years in Army Reserves, my Dad over thirty, retired as full Colonel, and my brother 4 years in the Navy, three trips to Nam. All of us are sickened by this clown. Every day with him in office is painful to watch.
He even did it in front of the Boy Scouts. He makes every event a political rally. If he'd been allowed to speak, he would have turned HW Bush's funeral into a partisan event as well.

(21,784 posts). . .on the "nuclear football" with FAKE CODES. If Trump is dumb enough to use the "nuclear option" out of sheer spite, the Pentagon will know of the fake codes being activated and that will be their signal to step in and perform the odious-but-necessary task of deposing him, physically, if need be.
Well, I can dream, right?

(81 posts)Trump lost the Pentagon for good after Mattis left in disgust. I don't know that he had a ton of respect from military commanders before hand, but he has none now. No credibility at all with them. Mattis is deeply respected and in many ways revered. He shit in his own rice bowl when he disrespected his former Secretary of Defense.
