Trump Just Showed That He Has No Clue How Grocery Stores Work

Trump Just Showed That He Has No Clue How Grocery Stores Work

Trump expressed the belief that grocery stores are giving government employees food on credit during the shutdown. This is, of course, not true.

Trump said, “I haven’t heard the statement, but I do understand, perhaps he should have said it differently. Local people know who they are when people go for groceries and everything else, they will work along. I know banks are working along. If you have mortgages, the folks collecting the interest and all of those things, they work along, and that is what happens in time like this. They know the people, they have been dealing with them for years. The grocery store, and I think that is probably what he meant, but I have not seen his statement, no, he has done a great job I will tell you that.”

Trump doesn’t understand how grocery stores work in 2019

Trump thinks that it is 1952 and everyone shops at a neighborhood market where the owner knows you and gives you a line of credit during hard times. This is not reality. In the real world, people shop at big box grocery chains where their names aren’t known. The store is a corporation, not a corner neighborhood market, and they don’t care if Donald Trump has taken away your paycheck because he wants a wall. They will not give you free food, or a line of credit. If you can’t afford groceries, they’ll direct you to the local food bank, and ask you to leave the store.

The president isn’t just out of touch with working people. He is out of touch with reality.

old Ike will square you away. Just pay him at the end of the month. Of course there's always payday loans. That industry was a big supporter of Trump. The average pay day loan has a 400% APR. That seems fair.

who gets off on the sound of his own voice.

There’s an actual corner store near me, and one of the clerks knows my taste in beers. They don’t extend store credit , though (they do take credit cards), and I wouldn’t expect them to: they have to pay their employees, suppliers, creditors, utilities, taxes, insurance - and somehow I don’t think those would be as patient as Trump thinks.

Trump, his father, and his son in law Jared were and are extremely punitive landlords who were intolerant of late payments. Records show that they were far more aggressive than average in their markets for kicking people out of their homes due to late payments.

Please remember this in the context of Trump's tweets. He knows how things work. TRUMP IS LYING.

GHW Bush went to a supermarket and was astonished they used scanners. This was 10 years after wide use, or so.

It was a pivotal moment in his career, forever branding him as out-of-touch.

Trump's statement is the same cluelessness---a rich guy who never went grocery shopping for himself or family. Working people can recognize a phony when they see one.

but the only time I saw tRump up close was in a Walmart on the NJ/PA border.
With Ivana in tow, he was growling at Don Jr for not having bought notebooks before returning to boarding school (Hill) in the fall of 1998.
His stretch limo was parked right in front of the doors to the store.

Maybe we can get old man Vince, dig him up from his grave, make it 1972, and he can reopen his corner store in the old neighborhood.
