From her interview with Rachel Maddox I know Kamala Harris is quite aware of where the opposition will attack her. One point she made was that because of the corruption in a forensic lab in California she threw out every conviction which relied on that lab to convict people. She was the Attorney General of California at the time.
She told Rachel that she knows she will be attacked for this and for the other normal things that the opposition attacks candidates. So in declaring her candidacy and basically starting in Oakland, CA, which has Barbara Lee as its Congressperson and has had Jerry Brown as its Mayor in the past (twice), she is getting a tremendous sendoff. She started off with a very large crowd of 20,000 people in the heart of downtown Oakland. That in itself is a huge indication that she is far ahead of other candidates who almost always start off with much smaller crowds.
But to get to my point. By kicking off first in what promises to be a crowded primary she is also giving the opposition the opportunity to get all their attacks on her out there so she can get past that and concentrate on keeping her lead. The opposition is going to have a very hard time keeping up with their capacity to destroy the Democratic candidates simply because there are so many of them who are really good candidates. Even Putin will find it hard. Hopefully too hard.
