50 years ago today; The Beatles Rooftop Concert

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Beatles%27_rooftop_concert

The Beatles' rooftop concert was the final public performance of the English rock band the Beatles. On 30 January 1969, the band, with keyboardist Billy Preston, surprised a central London office and fashion district with an impromptu concert from the roof of the headquarters of the band's multimedia corporation Apple Corps at 3 Savile Row. In a 42-minute set, the Beatles played nine takes of five songs before the Metropolitan Police asked them to reduce the volume. Footage from the performance was used in the 1970 documentary film Let It Be.

1. A British friend of mine heard it, though he never got to where he could actually see them.

But he could hear them from where he was on the street. Talk about right place, right time!

My daughter lives in London and I've been there. With the height and the narrow street you couldn't see them at street level or even across the street but you would have heard them.

But hey, when they broke up in April 1970 we got five artists bringing great music--counting Billy Preston.

6. I'm 53, so any first hand Beatles memories are thin...

In fact, my earliest Beatles memory is of their breakup, and 5 year old me bouncing on a bed with my childhood friend talking about how unbelievable it was.

My Beatlemania started when my sister bought the red and blue Greatest Hits albums. I played them incessantly and became a fan. They still are my #1 band.

and remember Beatles music playing around the house from a very young age. The John Lennon Collection album, too. But, the day I first understood how important they were was the day John Lennon was shot. My mother was crying and terribly upset. It left quite an impression on 5-year old me. It's one of my clearest early memories.

(I also thought CSN were family friends because of the photo album-like cover of Deja Vu. Dogs, guns, the hair ... they looked like my Dad and his buddies. )

My grandsons and I are at my house, not daring to go out in the -3 temperature. I was not old enough to experience this in real time, I was 4, but the Beatles have been a huge musical soundtrack in my life. And I am passing that on to these two. When Hey, Jude comes on the player in the car we are singing along and it always feels so easy and yet also very magical!
