Is defending blackface and Klan regalia a hill you want to die on?

(3,344 posts)I was expecting some very long statement and explanation. Maybe it wasn't him. Or he never saw the yearbook and it was created by others, etc.
But, nope. Just a few words and no real explanation.
He's 59 years old today and voted for George Bush. Twice. Good riddance!

I'm a white woman, and I'm feeling quite sick about this whole discussion. I can't imagine how the POC here feel.

(25,586 posts)and even I am gobsmacked by the bullshit rationalizations and excuses being bandied about here. Some things are simply inexcusable and cannot be overlooked.
The fact that there is even an argument here is pathetic.

(4,387 posts)What has his life and legislative record looked like since then? Is it reflective of that photo? Does it seem like he holds racist attitudes in any of his actions since then? Wasn't he the guy who pushed for getting rid of confederate monuments?
I don't know the answers to these questions. But I do know that lots of people do stupid things when they're younger. I believe people can change and without other evidence this seems like a big overreaction to me for him to resign.

Would like to see all Democrats take a serious look at the case of the African American Vermont legislator who resigned her office due to her fear for her and her family's safety and her belief that her community would not act to protect her.
Is this accurate and if so, why are we not forcefully addressing this?

Right now I believe there are many white-identified Democrats who are contributing to institutionalized racism and sexism in their own backyards but engage wittingly or unwittingly in a continuing the institutionalized behaviors . The demand that people like Northam resign then serves as a coverup. Just keeping up appearances.
