Maybe it's that simple. Maybe Trump was broke or near broke, skating of financial thin ice (can't wait to see the tax returns) and he figured running for the presidency would better his brand. "Think of the speaking fees," he probably thought, looking at Bill Clinton. What can go wrong, he may have figured: If I lose, 49% more of the population will know my name. If I win it's pure payday.

3. he certainly is venal

but just the thought of anybody paying this guy to give a speech is... I bet even his fans won't do that once he's out of office--what pearls of wisdom would he have to impart that everyone hasn't heard a zillion times already? And once he's out of power, the main attraction (owning the libs) is gonegonegone.

I'm sure he did plan on boosting the brand but he's so stupid he's tanking it instead.
