Tell your senators to protect the Johnson Amendment!
Once again, the Johnson Amendment is under attack from the Religious Right and we need your help.
The Johnson Amendment is the federal law that keeps all 501(c)(3)s, including churches, from endorsing political candidates. If the amendment were overturned, churches would be able to politick from the pulpit while retaining their tax exemption, becoming unregulated super PACs. This would create a new category of dark money because churches are financial black holes and are not required to report annual financial returns to the IRS.
This week, House Republican Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., Reps. Jody Hice, R-Ga., and Mike Johnson, R-La., and Sen. James Lankford, R-Okla., announced the reintroduction of the Free Speech Fairness Act, intended to repeal the Johnson Amendment.
Please use our simple, automated system to contact your senators and tell them to protect the Johnson Amendment and to vote down the Free Speech Fairness Acta name Big Brother would admire. Feel free to use or adapt the talking points provided.

(758 posts)some dumb teachings of a wise man elevated to a god. This will be the death of American christianity, it will sink to wholly another propaganda tool for the right wing.

(3,256 posts)It's really a useless law because it's never enforced. It's a wink, wink, nod,nod situation. What really needs to be done at a minimum is to require churches to submit a form 990 like every other 501(c)(3)s non profit.

(88 posts)With the Democrats in charge it will never come up for a vote much less pass in the House. That will then be used to claim Dems are (insert some attack on Dems here). Republicans are so predictable.
