Hanoi Summit Failed Because Trump Refuses to Prep

Hanoi Summit Failed Because Trump Refuses to Prep
Trump hates to prepare and likes to negotiate from the gut. The Hanoi humiliation with Kim Jong Un was the direct result.

Nothing about the Hanoi summit’s outcome is a surprise. The writing was on the wall, the president just refused to read it.

President Donald Trump’s failure to engage in the most basic preparatory work for this summit—and his longstanding penchant for putting personal convictions ahead of his experts’ opinions—meant that there was no way that he could have come out of this summit with a denuclearization deal.

I helped prep President Barack Obama for high-level meetings, and President Trump’s failure to engage in the first step of any presidential meeting prep was a strong indicator that this summit was doomed to fail.

Typically, summit prep begins with the president and his intelligence community agreeing on a baseline assessment of the state-of-play, in this case the status of North Korea’s nuclear program and Kim Jong Un’s intentions. The intelligence community’s assessment that North Korea will not denuclearize, the open-source analysis that Pyongyang is still proliferating weapons of mass destruction, and reporting that North Korea is taking extra steps to disburse its arsenal seemingly fell on deaf ears.

In January President Trump said that his intelligence community was wrong on North Korea and there’s reporting that he put more faith in Vladimir Putin’s North Korea analysis (which is never unbiased) underplaying North Korea’s missile threat than he did in the U.S. intelligence community’s analysis.

Without presidential agreement on a baseline assessment on North Korea’s program and Kim’s intentions, it was clear that President Trump couldn’t have been fully prepping with his own, home team. Absent an agreed upon assessment, there was no way to identify a realistic goal for the summit or a strategy to achieve it.

1. Or is this another scheme from Putin, and planned this way?

So he can be included, then trump can claim he helped so trump can then lift his and Kim's sanctions with? Watching very closely, and waiting for putin to be all of sudden helping to get this done for him, and kim will just ignore anything agreed upon. That's probably what they're up to now, taking orders from putin to get this done for him. Its also for PR , to then claim greatness and demand from trump he should be getting awards for it. All staged? Sounds like something they would do. trump would then get his cut from the lifting of sanctions.

2. Face it. He is too stupid and incompetent to do the job.

He is a complete disaster. We need to get rid of him before he can do any more damage to our standing in the world.

11. That's just it. He's an idiot but thinks he's the smartest guy in the room.

Just the kind of sucker who gets rolled by Kim and Putin.

3. Trump mistakenly feels that he is such a great dealmaker

that he could make anyone sign on the dotted line with hogwash, bullshit and a whole bunch of nefarious lies.

It doesn't work against people who do their homework.

4. In the face of total humiliation on the world stage, Trump learns this lesson:

It's the Democrats fault for scheduling the Cohen hearing while he was at the "summit."

12. And the fool conveniently forgets the Cohen hearing was originally...

scheduled for Feb. 7 but was postponed after he threatened Cohen and his family.

When will this disastrous imposter finally be cast out of the WH?

5. It was never going to be anything but political theater

Because North Korea has absolutely zero intent to give up its nuclear weapons.

6. Little Kimmy ain't gonna be happy with Little Donny...

After spending 70-hours on a train getting there, two days in Hanoi and then 70-hours back home, Kim might just say screw the USA forever and snuggle up closer to China and Russia.

Would love to be a fly on John Kerry's or Barack Obama's wall......

I can just see Kim's tantrums on that train ride in parallel with Trump's hissy fits on AF-1.....

8. Nah. Kim is happy as a clam. He showed up the President of the (used to be) most powerful

and influential country in the world. He made trump look weak, lazy, ineffective and foolish. They probably had a big party on that train ride back. Because Kim prepared for this summit, he knew exactly what was going to happen.

13. Yes. Kim is pleased. He's now feels he's a world leader with the attention...

of the international community and on a par with the US—and still with his nukes which he had no intention of giving up.

And what's with the train trip?

trump props up this cruel, little dictator who apparently can't afford a plane to fly to a summit in.

19. I was joking about all the travel time Kim wasted, LOL.

But, I'm sure he's got the very best communications gear China has to offer for his entertainment!

Nice summary article here:

Trump was out of his depth in Hanoi. This failure is his greatest flop yet
The blunderer-in-chief has let North Korea’s dictator emerge unscathed over his regime’s appalling human rights abuses
Simon Tisdall - The Guardian

Link: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/feb/28/trump-hanoi-failure-kim-advantage-north-korea-human-rights

While Kim basks in Trump’s praise as a “great leader” and “friend”, an out-manoeuvred, out-thought US president has been left to trail home with nothing to show. Kim will not worry, for example, that an always symbolic end to the 1950-53 Korean war was not agreed. But he will be delighted the risk of precipitate American military action has further receded. Meanwhile, he can continue his covert nuclear build-up.
------
Trumps’s rightwing nationalistic instincts; his coddling of dictators; his cultivated ignorance of complex, sensitive international problems; and his image-driven refusal to look beyond the next news cycle, have become fixed features of his foreign policy approach.

It is this approach that has given us the appeasement of Vladimir Putin’s Russia at Europe’s expense, cut-and-run troop withdrawals from Syria and Afghanistan, a dangerously obsessive vendetta against Iran, an unconscionable betrayal of the Palestinians, and a chaotic attempt to impose regime change on Venezuela.

Trump’s Hanoi bumbling follows a set pattern of unfitness. It is the very opposite of leadership. And it can only give comfort to the enemy.

As usual, Trump and right-wing media will flip the truth upside-down and declare this a huge victory!.....

10. People tht know what they are talking about

are not welcome in this administration.

Look at that pic of trump sitting in a baby chair. If trump had people in his employ that knew what they were doing that never would have happened. The visual on that made trump look like an idiot on the world stage. Details matter.

14. Has he figured out who to blame yet?

He can't blame Little Kim.

I know, it's the Democrats' fault! They held that "fake" hearing and smeared him in public and Little Kim saw it and thought he would take advantage!

17. He's good at making promises he can't keep to people who are too stupid to know he

can't keep them. Then he goes through motions to make them think "he's trying, therefore we will give him credit for it" without him actually doing anything. A total charade.

Anyone with any sense knows that Kim isn't going to just voluntarily give up his nukes.

18. Exactly

Trump was paying attention to the Cohen hearings. When the discussion turned to more nuanced exhange, closing this facility for lifting of this sanction, he was completely lost.
