At CPAC yesterday, Trump claimed Democrats investigating his "deals" before he assumed office was "sick." Yet Republicans spent years investigating the Clintons' involvement in the failed 1979 Whitewater real estate deal, once Bill Clinton assumed office in 1992, making it one of the biggest political controversies of the 1990s.
It began with an investigation into the real estate investments of Bill and Hillary Clinton and their associates, Jim McDougal and Susan McDougal, in the Whitewater Development Corporation. While Special Counsel Kenneth Starr failed to find criminality by the Clintons in that deal, he did eventually dig up other dirt in the course of that investigation, namely Bill Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky that he denied in a deposition, which Republicans used to impeach Clinton.
The Whitewater failed business venture was incorporated in 1979 with the purpose of developing vacation properties on land along the White River near Flippin, Arkansas. The Clintons lost between $37,000 and $69,000 on their Whitewater investment. Trump, on the other hand, has made hundreds of millions of dollars in shady deals with Russians, our biggest geopolitical adversary.
Any time Republicans claim investigation of Trump's old finances is off limits, we need to remind them of what they did with Whitewater.
On Edit: On AM Joy today, Seema Iyer, former prosecutor and defense attorney, noted that n 2017, the NY Times published a a secret memo by Kenneth Starr's attorneys finding that sitting presidents CAN be indicted for crimes committed before taking office. Something else to throw back in Republicans' face!

(38,427 posts)This will continue till Mueller gets some of Trump's children. Then Trump might fire Mueller. Then, the real crisis will hit. In the end Trump will not be the president, because of one simple idea: Donald Trump is a crook. Mueller will prove that to all of us. If certain people believe the truth, that is up to them. The truth is the truth.
...It took a while for some to believe the world was round. This is the same. Donald Trump is a crook. Actually a worse crook than Nixon.

(10,500 posts)"Nobody asked me to lie. And nobody offered me a job for my silence."
Monica Lewinsky volunteered that at the end of her testimony. Starr didn't even ask her, because he already knew the answer and didn't want to give her a chance to say it. And then he withheld that info from his report. It was eventually revealed when people poured through the transcripts of her grand jury testimony.
Ken Starr was a genuine fascist. He still is.

(81,261 posts)Hey, CHILD SEXUAL PREDATOR JEFFREY EPSTEINS LAWYER Ken Starr took HOW long? To climb all over every imagined scandal that even remotely had some connection to a Clinton? To sift through both Bill and Hillarys bellybutton lint? What was it? Four years? At a cost to taxpayers of something like 60-79 million dollars? And for what? All they could come up with that they could make stick was a stained blue dress, a lie about a blow job between two consenting adults.
The CONS and Clinton haters were just FINE with that.
And now theyre bellyaching because the Mueller probe has taken two years or so, and is now metastasizing from just (JUST!!!) the Russia scandal into some genuinely serious and heavyweight criminal financial crimes. Well thats just too damn bad. Suck it up, CONS. You and the mob family you worship can just sit there and whine. Tell it to one of your gas giant friends on Pox Noise or the Excrement in Broadcasting network.

(3,163 posts)At the time, Democrats protested vigorously and at great length that Whitewater was most certainly not fair game. Now we are saying that it was fair game so that we can use it as justification in our war against an elected president, because we are not the ones who elected that president. Just as Republicans invoked a war against an elected president because they were not the ones who elected that president.
Note I said "we." I am a Democrat, vote Democrat, including Clinton and Obama twice. I also have a brain that is capable of logic and know how to use it. If we want to conduct investigations against Trump that's fine, but don't try to convince me that whatever the Republicans did justifies what we do. A bank robber can't say that he's justified in robbing a bank because John Dillinger did it.
I know, I know: we are correcting an election corrupted by Russians, James Comey, "self hating white women," the electoral college which is designed to promote slavery and all of that. Get over it. The election was held in accordance with the procedure described in our constitution, and no direct evidence of rigging has ever been offered other than that the Democratic primary election was rigged.
I was disgusted by the endless justifications of something Obama did by claiming that "Bush did it first," and I'm disgusted with the justification of what we do against Trump being justified by "Republicans did it to Clinton." We're not supposed to be like Republicans. We're supposed to be better than Republicans. When people say there is no difference between the two parties, we're not supposed to do things that prove them correct.

(51,553 posts)This thread is about GOP hypocrisy. It is not about justifying the Whitewater investigation. Whitewater was everything the Republicans wrongly accuse the Mueller investigation of being. Republicans are hypocrites, liars and are constantly projecting. They accuse others of their own misdeeds.
The two parties are not the same, and this thread does not "prove" otherwise.
Please take your anti-Dem, 2016 primary Russian/GOP talking points elsewhere.

(13,390 posts)It is not helpful to put Whitewater anywhere near the realm of what we are looking at with Trump. "If their spiteful investigation is was okay, so is ours" doesn't fly.
This is something altogether different and the people who are resisting investigation are not just protecting him out of partisan loyalty. They are refusing to do their jobs.

(51,553 posts)This thread is about GOP hypocrisy. It is not about justifying the Whitewater investigation. Whitewater was everything the Republicans wrongly accuse the Mueller investigation of being. It went on for 5 long years and found no financial criminality by the Clintons. Instead, it found Bill Clinton had a consensual affair.
Republicans are hypocrites, liars and are constantly projecting. They accuse others of their own misdeeds. We should be pointing this out every day.
loyalsister
(13,390 posts)It is very helpful to the GOP to have standing to call us hypocrites when we call them out for their loyalty. It's apples and oranges.
Supporting an effort to trivialize Trump's behaviors as just another partisan strategy only helps them.
Trump using the same language we used to describe white water is most likely not an accident.
SunSeeker
(51,553 posts)Pointing out that they spent 5 years chasing down Whitwater criminality and found none, so they have no grounds to complain about a 2 year investigation that has produced over 30 guilty pleas/convictions.
The GOP don't own language. We have a right to and should use the same language they falsely used against us. We're telling the truth and they were lying.
The alternative is silence regarding GOP crimes. And that does indeed help the GOP.

Our President never said the FBI was corrupt. Our President never made outrageous personal attacks on the special counsel and individual FBI agents. What you are saying is truly insulting to Dems. I would know, I am a Dem.
The point of the OP is that Whitewater was about looking for pre-election financial crimes; but the GOP is saying now looking into Trump's financial crimes "crosses a line" and amounts to "Presidential harrassment." We have to point out their hypocrisy. Pre-election financial crimes are legitimately a subject of inquiry, whether you like it or not.
