Stephen Hawking's nurse suspended for financial misconduct and questions about her care
Stephen Hawking’s longtime nurse has been suspended for a slew of causes, including financial misconduct. Patricia Dowdy, 61, who worked for the esteemed physicist for 15 years, was suspended on an interim basis in 2016 — two years before Hawking died — reported the BBC.
The infractions she is accused of committing are not having the proper qualifications, not providing appropriate care, dishonesty and failing to cooperate with nursing board the Nursing and Midwifery Council. The board claimed Dowdy did not “provide the standards of good, professional care we expect and Professor Hawking deserved.”
“As the public rightly expects, in serious cases such as this — where a nurse has failed in their duty of care and has not been able to give evidence to the panel that they have learned from their mistakes and be fit to practice — we will take action,” said director of fitness to practice Matthew McClelland.
Hawking died in March 2018 at his Cambridge home in at the age of 76 — a staggering 55 years after his ALS diagnosis. His seminal work “A Brief History of Time” spent an unprecedented 237 weeks at No. 1 on the British Sunday Times beginning in the late 1980s.
