"SNIP....
When asked if white nationalism was a rising threat in the wake of the attacks on mosques in New Zealand that left 49 people dead, the Washington Post reports President Trump on Friday said: I dont really. I think its a small group of people that have very, very serious problems.
Trump called the incident a terrible thing and said he had not seen a manifesto, purportedly from one of the attackers, that named him as an inspiration for white identity ideology.

(81,569 posts)Importantly, the number of incidents of violence perpetrated by the far right is on the rise. The Institute for Economics and Peace noted in its 2018 Global Terrorism Index report that the number of such killings increased from three in 2014 to 17 in 2017.
Meanwhile, Islamist-inspired terrorism appears to be on the wane, with the attempt to create a caliphate in the Middle East roundly defeated and the ideal of pure Islamic statehood losing its attractiveness to the assorted misfits among the Wests Muslim minorities. According to Janes Terrorism and Insurgency Centers Global Attack Index, fatalities linked to Islamic State declined by 51.5 percent in 2018.

(269,157 posts)A terrorist attack by a white supremacist at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, has killed 49 people, mostly Muslims, and injured nearly 40 more. An online screed the shooter apparently left behind explained that he was specifically targeting Muslims who invaded our lands [and] live on our soil and that it was an act of revenge against Islam.
The Trump administrations condolences have so far failed to use the word Muslim or Islam. Under Donald Trump, the US government has banned immigration from several Muslim-majority countries, sharply cut the number of Muslim refugees admitted, and used divisive language to criticize the Islamic religions nearly two billion followers, in sharp contrast to previous US presidents.

The far-right was responsible for the majority of Americas extremist killings in 2017

Over the last decade, 71% of domestic extremist related killings in the US were linked to right-wing extremists, while Islamic extremists committed 26% of the killings...
