'Republicans are in trouble': GOP pollster freaks out at data showing young voters fleeing her party

BRAD REED 01 APR 2019 AT 12:14 ET

The Republican Party’s lack of appeal to young voters only looks to get worse in the coming years as the post-Millennial generation comes of age and registers to vote.

Analysis of recent polling data by the New York Times finds that younger Americans are fleeing the GOP, especially younger Americans of color who make up nearly half of the electorate among Generation Z.

“Republicans are in trouble,” GOP pollster Kristen Soltis Anderson tells The Times. “It would not surprise me if the problem is worse, not better, with Gen Z, given the moment we’re in.”

The Times then cites research from political scientists showing that voters establish partisan identity during their formative years and rarely switch even as they get older.

not be a bully
not be a braggart
be honest
have integrity
respect women
embrace diversity
act like a grownup
be compassionate
never resort to name calling

And then they have a political party that says it is okay to vote for a pResident that goes against all they've been taught. Good luck with that.

6. I would love to believe the younger generations will find a way to move past backward thinking

And maybe actually generate enough political will to make hard choices with respect to the environment, sustainability, and so on, and there can be actual political discussion about how best to move forward with initiatives to enhance and promote the welfare of all citizens, and take steps to mitigate climate change impacts or adapt our infrastructure to better withstand what we know is coming, etc., rather than having to talk about whether we even should do so at all.

I would like to believe that the younger generations won't include so many fascist-minded, hateful thugs as we have now...but I've always been disappointed at such prospects in the past. The "hippie" generation seemed on the verge of really changing things, but there seems to have been a backlash and now capitalism/corporate power over human interests are even more thoroughly entrenched in our government structures.

Well, on the bright side, cultural diversification seems likely to significantly increase in any potential scenario, which can only be good, in my opinion, for the future of our society here on this continent (whether the current political apparatus survives for any substantial additional length of time or not).
